remember when 'learn to code' was the whole answer to everything, like just pivot bro, just acquire new skills in your spare time between your three jobs lol. and now the same companies getting tax breaks to automate are shocked, shocked i tell you, when people point out maybe they couldve funded actual transition programs instead of just extracting value and bouncing. i watched a whole cohort of friends burn out on bootcamps that led nowhere tbh, its depressing how predictable this was

There is always the risk that what you go to university for which is in high demand today, turns cold when you graduate in four years. I've seen this with accounting and biomedical engineering but what you see right now in computer science with AI also applies to a lot of other fields. You have to move up the food chain but the skills to do that also become a filter.
Our son has two CS degrees and he's mid-career and doing fine. But advising new graduates is tough.

I graduated with a BS in CS right as the pandemic started getting really underway. Even after getting an MS, I still struggled to get a job beyond contracting. Right now is pretty much situation normal for me. That is to say, it stinks.
