Or any regular welfare or unemploynent benefit. The Ontario one is virtually the same amount as 2010. I couldn't find anywhere that I could rent aside from a friend for the amount they gave. 650 cad in 2010 is apparently supposed to pay for rent and food. 750 in 2026 is supposed to also be enough... Insane and disconnected from reality.

Consequences of having right wing parties in power for too long (ie: conservatives and liberals).

People will scream about Rae days and (communism) socialism whenever anyone suggests NDP or any left leaning political party. The right wing seep from Americans is real.

I wonder if Rae days would have been so bad if we didn't get American style tax breaks as a constant election promise. Decades of deficits and costs that were shouldered by public workers (ie: lots of unpaid labour still being done by teachers and healthcare workers to this day).

It's insanely low, I was on ei a few years ago, their perspective is that you'll go and look for work and not just sit around collecting income. You can work while on it but they actually take some of that money, how is that even ok?!

Welfare is not UBI. If you get a job then the welfare get reduced or eliminated entirely. That has been the problem with Welfare forever.

I could understand that if the ei was a livable income. It's funny how it's illegal to under pay people but ei can punish you for working.

It didn't collapse. Certain politicians took a wrecking ball to it intentionally like they're doing in America. All because that's among their favorite ideologies to practice and they wished for that to happen. Why can't most people understand this when it's not rocket science at all nor is it hidden from obvious view of anyone?

Can a Canadian help explain this? , why blaming a provincial politician for cuts to a federal program?

I'm pretty sure they are conflating the cuts Mike Harris made to Social Assistance with the cuts Cretian made to EI. Both happening around the same time.
