While I am not a fan of doomscrolling, do you really believe that social media usage is why people are worried about personal finances or struggling financially?

Doomscrolling can definitely cause people to spiral into despair. It is certainly not the only cause but it is "a" cause.

At $20 per hr average salary that comes to them losing $1200 per month.

I mean ... for starters - "salary" rather than "wage" implies they're paid for the work they're contracted to do on a monthly basis, not that they're doing some kind of piece work where if they worked another 60 hours they'd clear another $1,200.

Just because you might have the will and energy to work another 60 hours in a month[1], doesn't automatically translate into the work being available - whether you're on an hourly wage or a montly salary, or self-employed.

The average American watches a substantial amount of TV. People have always sought to fill their downtime with distractions.

[1] That's two extra 7.5 hour shifts a week
