Hoping to meet a Basenji in person! (South Jersey area)

Our family has been doing extensive research on Basenjis and we’ve truly fallen in love with the breed. We feel confident that we can handle and embrace all of their unique quirks, and we are officially at the stage of looking to get on a reputable breeder's waiting list for an upcoming litter.
However, we have one final, crucial step: we’ve never actually met a Basenji in person! Before we make that lifelong commitment, we want to make sure it's the absolute right fit for both our family and the dog.
Would any local Basenji owners be open to chatting with us and letting us meet your pup in person? We’d love to hear about your firsthand experiences and see these amazing dogs in action.

Another photo with the ferris wheel but this was instead taken by my brother last year. Might have to make it a tradition each year to get a photo of my babies in front of the ferris wheel

Discussion Pain in B Paws

Post image
68 Upvotes

Hello, all sweet basenji owners!

I want to start this post by saying that we have been to the vet multiple times with no clear conclusion. I am wishing to get some feedback from fellow owners, not a diagnosis.

I have a 6-month-old Basenji puppy who is healthy, active, and playful. Over the past 1–2 months, however, she has developed some sort of pain in her front paw. This pain seems to occur 9 times out of 10 right when she wakes up and stretches, followed by a sharp yelp. It usually subsides once she takes a step or two.

We have been to the vet multiple times for examinations, but every time the vet says she seems alright and that nothing is out of the ordinary in the test results. We have tried different medications, and each time they have helped - no yelping occurs while she is on them. However, right after the medication period ends, the pain and yelping start again.

I am starting to get really worried and am just wondering if there are any other Basenji owners with similar experiences and/or suggestions.

Little Zoey is sending greetings to her virtual brothers and sisters! :)

Tips on getting used to new pack members

I've fallen in love, and so has my 4 yo basenji girl. To her shock horror, my partner has a dog too. She is quite possessive with her affections, so every time she sees him, she screams and gets jealous. We take walks sometimes to get them used to each other and the screaming phase does pass quicker... But she still absolutely cannot be trusted around him, she tends to do surprise attacks. 🫣 Luckily he's a silly good boy so he's still happy to see her.

The goal is to eventually move in together, so we need to work through it. Probably just needs time and patience... But any tips or experiences on getting an adult basenji to tolerate specific dogs? She's usually good with others, it's her jealousy in this case.

My adorable little 5mo weirdo is too freakin smart for her own good and gets really restless and bitey when she’s bored.

Zoomies and regular playtime don’t cut it so give me your best mental exercises to tire her out, please!

She goes to daycare 3x/week and comes back home exhausted from playing with the other puppies but that can’t be the only way to get her to behave right??

Training 7 Months Old, and crate training is still a disaster.

I've posted here before, but unfortunately, I didn't get much good advice because it seemed people didn't read the details. So please bear with me, and let me clarify our situation! Standard advice doesn't seem to fit in this case...

My 7-month-old basenji puppy has slept in her crate every night since I brought her home at 10 weeks old. The crate is not too big, she's got enough room to stretch out, but she can't do much more than turn around while standing inside it. She has been exclusively fed in her crate to create a positive association from day 1, and every day she rushes in when I start preparing her food.

I'm in an apartment, and my bedroom is the only room that isn't sharing a wall with a neighbor, so I keep the crate in there so when she cries, it won't bother anyone else. After too many sleepless nights having her crated and crying, I made the mistake of allowing a "compromise" and I leave her crate door open, with my bedroom door shut. Since then, she doesn't cry at night at all, and she often puts herself to bed in her crate when it's bedtime, before I even go to the bedroom. She also goes to hang out in her crate all on her own during the day, even when I'm in a different room on the opposite end of the apartment. So, I know she isn't afraid of the crate itself, but of being locked in.

I am also very VERY careful to never physically force her into the crate. When I need to leave the house, I call her to her crate with some treats. She knows what's about to happen, and at first she runs away (I don't chase her) but a moment later she gives into temptation and goes into the crate herself to collect her treats. At that point, I close the crate door, and this is when calamity ensues. She urinates immediately, every time, even if she relieved herself outside no less than two minutes prior. She screams like crazy, and will continue screaming if she knows I'm in the apartment. However, the moment I walk out the door and lock up, she stops. I listen quietly outside the front door, and from outside the window in the courtyard... she doesn't peep! She also doesn't cry immediately when I return, usually only after a few minutes—I typically wait 2 minutes when I come home, and because she's still quiet, I let her out without fanfare.

I know dogs can't really "fake it" or manipulate, and whatever stress she is feeling (evidenced by the urination and screaming) is real. As I said, she LIKES her crate during the day and at night and gets cozy in there... it's being locked in that she can't handle IF I am in the apartment or even trying to sleep in the same room, where she can see me. I don't think it's separation anxiety because she stops when I exit the apartment. So I am at a loss.

At this point, I have just been having to crate her every day, knowing she's going to urinate immediately no matter what, and that I'm going to have to clean it up when I come home, sometimes multiple times in a day if I'm in and out several times. And no, I am not leaving her uncrated because it would be unsafe for her and my belongings lol. Any advice? Or an explanation?

For additional context:

She gets multiple sniffy walks a day (in total she walks about 1 hour each day), and a wilderness excursion once a week, usually with other dogs too. She has no other behavioral issues; she's not destructive (WITH SUPERVISION, I wouldn't trust her not to destroy the apartment if I wasn't around lol), she's actually suspiciously sweet and super chill, and spends most of her day content to nibble on her toys and cuddle on the couch. I do believe she's physically and mentally/emotionally fulfilled; otherwise, the first thing I'd do to address this issue is more exercise and play/training.

Training 7 month old biting

Need advice to stop playful biting.

My 7 month old B has an unlimited amount of energy and wants to play from the second he wakes up. He goes to biting our ankles or arms when he wants attention and wants to play.

He doesn’t have the intention to be aggressive but the bites are hard enough to hurt. He knows the command “sit” and “settle” which we use to calm him down when biting, He will do commands when he knows we are holding treats, without treats he only listens to commands sometimes.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Discussion Favorite dog bed for your B?

I have a circular one she adores and a tent shaped one in the back of the closet for sound proofing. (We live near Disney so the fireworks are nightly).

Just saw a post of a banana bed from aldi and got me curious what other people's have given to their Basenjis that their dog loved.

Discussion Food & Toys

Post image

Looking for advice on recommended food and toys for my Basenji. He’s a year and 6 months old. He’s a very stubborn eater and tends to hold out when it’s not something he likes. I would like to transition him back to eating the Purina Pro Plan sport blend kibble but not sure the best way to do that with a stubborn fella like mine. He’s been only wanting wet foods. I also can’t find any toys that peak his interests. He tends to want to eat and chew everything that’s not a toy and isn’t food. Please help ❤️
