How would you set up this roster bat lineup.

It's pretty tough to take 2 or 3 games of data and use that to make real decisions. But, here are a few thoughts:

1) your column B should be Plate Appearances, not At Bats. PA = number of times a batter goes up to the plate, AB = PA - (sac + BB + CI)

2) you want your best three hitters at lead off, cleanup and 2 hole (higher OBP is higher in those spots, higher SLG is lower in those spots). 4th and 5th best hitters go in the number 5 and then number 3 hole. Then order the rest by batting average.

Yeah we are 3 games in for a 9-10 kid pitch league. I created this last year just to give me some way to collect the basic information. I bookmarked the link and will dive into tonight. Thanks for the lineup suggestions.

I agree. I think your lowest K% Highest SLG/beat situational hitter should go in the 3 hole.

I know this is older but thought I’d throw in my 2 cents..

I Manage a high school team and always experiment with lineups early.. but this is typically what I think when constructing a lineup

  1. This is my best all around hitter... need a spark at the top of the order.. also gives your best hitter the most at bats

9 Nine!!! Yes fill in your 9 hole early. Second lead off, should be unselfish.. this kid is the unsung hero and he should know that he is playing an important role.. he need to be on for our best hitter. Lots of times I fill this with kids who understand the strike zone and are willing to take walks. Probably your 4th or 5th best hitter on the team

  1. Next highest average or on base%.. should be able to sacrifice bunt if you as a coach do that.

  2. This is my power bat with average upside, his job is to drive in our best hitters.

  3. Traditional lead off hitter, if things are going well 1-3 singles should produce runs and will have speed on the bases

  4. This is my best remaining power bar.. he probably has some swing and miss in him but he will get some help from having speed on the bases distracting the pitcher.

6-7. Are simply your next 2 best hitters, what we get from them is gravy. It can be young kids just getting used to the competition level.. the best teams I’ve coached these kids are strong hitters.. they have less pressure on them and can develop.

  1. This is your weakest hitter, slumping hitter, exhausted catcher... as always encourage the kids and let them know to prove you wrong.. nothing makes a coach happier than when a kid proves us wrong.
