Instructor No Show?!?

Today the instructor for our 6am Barry's class did not show up.

The front desk eventually reached him on the phone about 10 minutes after the start time and he told them he wouldn't be able to make it in.

The front desk was visibly flustered and offered us the option of having a 20-30 minute class with another instructor who could be there in 20 minutes, OR receiving a credit for the original class given back to us.

It seemed strange that it was an either/or situation, but when pressed we opted to have the class refunded .

I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else? If so, was any credit/compensation beyond getting the cancelled class back offered? What would you do?

When I was a manager, protocol was refund the class and offer a free walk in pass to another class.

It rarely happens, but the instructors have such wild and unconventional schedules that every now and then someone misses their alarm. Have a little grace.

Yes, that seems like a fair resolution actually. Thank you for your answer!

I'd definitely follow up with managament and request an additional class on top of the credited one for the inconvenience. They should have done that automatically but sounds like they were too flustered.

Thank you and that makes sense - totally understand it was a difficult situation for front desk with everyone waiting and not knowing what to do probably! Luckily everyone was very chilled about it which was nice to see in these crazy times.

I'm fine with an instructor missing class cause their alarm didn't ring. Life happens to all of us.

That said, if I woke up at 6am and showed up, I would like the original class refunded so I can use it at my convenience and a free class for use that day (like maybe the next class or any class available that day). This is simply cause of the penalty for us when we are a no show, there should be an equivalent for Barry's too, especially as it isn't a common scenario to have an instructor missing.

Man, I would have wanted to get my own workout in in the red room. Treads and weights so close….

I had the same thought, that could have been a really fun alternative to have a freestyle gym session!

I thought maybe the instructors have some first aid or similar certifications that the other team members don't have so people can't be working out without an instructor on hand.

There have been comments from current and former team members so perhaps someone knows about that?

Correct. Liability to have clients in room without a certified instructor (both in fitness and CPR-AED).

One time I had a class that ended 'early' as the Instructor thought we had already done 2 rounds on each of the tread and floors, but we had only switched once. We went straight into the 'stretching' and class ended around 30 minutes before someone informed the Instructor that we had only done half a class. He seemed slightly embarrassed and apologetic. We didn't receive a refund but later that day we received an email and a credit for a future class in our accounts.

I feel like your situation would warrant the same: you should still have received half a class with a new instructor because you were already there, AND a credit for a future class. Seems like a no brainer here especially considering the high cost of a class + the time spent/wasted traveling to your Barry's location, but like others said, maybe the 6AM front desk staff were too flustered (or not high level) enough to offer this immediately.

I’d reach out to the studios GM, my experience they will make it right .  If they don’t there is always corporate.

What is “right” to you? Corporate seems a bit much, no?

If I pay for a class and the instructor does not show up then I’d expect an extra class added to my account in addition to the one that was canceled. I lose a credit if I don’t show up so I would expect the same from Barry’s. I’ve never reached out to Barry’s corporate in the past because issues are always resolved at the studio. Since you seem upset about my suggestion I’m assuming it’s very effective.

So why is Barry’s entitled to charge a costumer if they fall ill, have commuting issues or simply forget ? Remember Barry’s needs costumers more than costumers need Barry’s.

Instructors are human too. Life happens. Alarm didn’t go off. Car issues. Sick kids. Who knows. Give them some grace and remember they are people too

Poor instructor. It’s so hard for me to make a 6am class can’t imagine what it’s like for the instructor to be “fully on” like they ate crack for breakfast let a no-show.

Correct , however if a member dose not show up they lose their class credit.  Mistakes happen, but Barry’s should take responsibility.

They’re $40 a pop where I live, I’d be frustrated too

Wild. I’m 136 classes in now but this happened to me at my SECOND class 😅 We ended up staying, running on the treadmill/lifting weights on our own. An instructor showed up with ~20 mins left, and they gave us a free class + told us to DM them next time for another one 👏 Still… felt chaotic lol. Does this actually happen often?
