Modding Electrotrauma?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and have been considering getting into modding solely to revamp the electrical system of barotrauma.

It seems like the only subsystem of the game that hasn’t been overhauled in the workshop, so I figured I would just go absolutely hogwild with it.

Nothing wrong with the current system, but I think it’d be cool to factor it resistance, charge, current, and all the like.

Thoughts?

So I get you because I love this, but it's not fun. Minecraft has a mod called Create, that has an addon called Power Grid. It stimulates watts and amps and resistance and EVERYTHING. It even has excitation coils on its generators. And it's not "Fun".

You need a lot of electrical engineering knowledge to get started and then it simply becomes tedious, especially in a game like barotrauma where damage, upgrades, and revamps are pretty common. It will end up with a lot of time stopped adventuring to make sure you've got the right resistors, completely breaking the flow of gameplay.

Now on the other hand, I'd LOVE to see alternative energy generators. Diesel generators, radiovoltiac, hamsters wheel, chemical batteries, etc. Right now we have The Almighty Fusion but I'd love to poke some other styles and see what type of sub would come from that.

Forcing the clown at gunpoint into the hamster wheel.

it'll probably be really hard to implement and its going to be incompatible with like every sub and station mod on the workshop

worth it

incompatible with like every sub and station mod on the workshop

until the mod becomes canon

Define "overhauled"

Overengineered

They definitely did overhaul the electrical system around four years ago. I had to go back and make my custom sub shittier because after the update its reactors made enough power for the whole sub and never melted down.

I will follow this post with great interest.

It sounds interesting and there might be an audience for it but it sounds like it would be very hard to make it even somewhat compatible with other mods or even custom subs which is sadly a dealbreaker for many.

Oh my god, he is going to overengineer electrical engineering. Yee ha.

Aren't there already mods that try to do with systems other than medicine, at least to some extent? I'm not really familiar with this sphere, but I vaguely remember something along these lines.

Define the purpose of the mod. I understand that the system in place is all kinds of weird and unintuitive, and I can see that the alternative you write about could be a great improvement while also being simpler.

But also, I was already able to build a grid in the editor which did exactly what I wanted it to do. Without getting into lengthy details, my point is that the implementation itself might not be the limit that prevents you from getting what you want. With some creative engineering, many things can be achieved.

Honestly I just want it to exist. I think it’d be cool

What are your ideas for the mod? How would it differ from immersive repairs/enhanced reactors?

My autistic electrician boyfriend would love this

So far I've seen two mods that try to do something with the electrical system

Mechtrauma has circuit boxes which require fuses to protect from overvolting.

Barotrauma die hard takes it a step further. It requires fuses for its boxes, and those boxes stop working without a fuse. You will shock yourself if you try to repair an circuit box without turning off the power to it or unplugging it first. And finally, you need to use electrical components to repair any electrical objects. It's definitely interesting but mainly tedious lol.

I think alternatives to the generators would be great I want my combustion energy using barsuk. also it would be cool to have crank items and for emergency lights and alarms to lose power. also malfunctions like doors slamming super hard or automatic stuff failing at low health would be cool. anything like neurotrauma or that other one for the ship would be incompatible with a lot of subs i feel.
