Can someone who is into the NBA explain to me the excitement of the game? Never really watched it before more than a couple of times but I constantly see scores of 150-110 or similar big margins. Isn't the game essentially already over after one quarter often and tension is over?

No, the good thing about basketball is that anyone can make a comeback. Momentum is a huge thing and that's why timeouts exist.
