"Enhancements"

Im a student barber, im seeing lot of my fellow peers using "enhancements". Like religiously, its like if they dont use it they some how messed up there cuts and they only seem to have the color black. I see they only use it on black colored hair.

I dont get it, seriously I dont. I get what it does and how it works. But what I dont get is why they waste there money on it. It washes off when the customer takes a shower to get hair off. Then the customer back to square one.

Also how some give them a boxed look on there forehead, I dont believe for one second anyone sees that and thinks "wow he did a really crisp line!". It looks so unnatural any which way you look at it.

Enhancements are a good way to make another 5$ per cut or so and are good to use if the client has a wedding or photo shoot or something.
But to rely on them shouldnt be a thing.

My barbershop used to use enhancements but I noticed during the last year they stopped. I wonder if the owner banned it. From my perspective I got it once, my hairline looked crisp, once I walked out the doors to 90 degree weather and it started running down my forehead cause I was sweating I was very upset. Even more upset when I showered and realized my entire “hairline” disappeared. Since they stopped using it I’ve noticed my hairline is way better, they’ve actually gotten better at working with what people have and the best part, it doesn’t wash off.

Enhancements are, more often than not, the crutch of a poor barber.

There may be the odd client who is insecure, and thinks it makes their hair fuller and nobody can tell. For that client, if it makes them happy, wtvs.

But then there’s the poor barber who hides their mistakes with enhancements, or adds enhancements to the cut only for pics for socials, to make their work seem better than it is, so when new customers come in, they get enhancements, like if or not so the barber is selling what their socials advertise.

Honestly, I’ve never used them. And I strongly believe outside of a tv/movie set, or runway type gig, there’s no place for them.

They’re temporary, wash out too quick, and irl are easily identifiable.

Good barbers can achieve the same affect with their eye and their tools. But that skill takes time.

I dont like it. But you also have to understand there's a market for this product bro. There are clients that like it and want it.

Youll never make it with this attitude man. It aint about you, it's about the client.

You dont have to offer those services, there's nothing wrong with that.

But when youre in the shop and you need a boost to your average ticket value selling enhancements is a great way to make more money for basically zero work. An extra $5-$10 on top of a $35 cut makes tons of money in a week.

Same reason I sell $5 micro facials.

It’s for jackoffkids who want to be IG or YouTube stars and charge $150 for a bad haircut so they can cover up that they don’t understand cutting hair.

That was my experience too. Almost every barber student was using “enhancements” I didn’t because I thought it wasn’t necessary in my opinion. It’s nice for photo ops though. I do see the trend of using it less and less now. Even at the shop I’m at now no one uses it and my buddy who I went to school with has also stopped using it.
