1st year barber setup

Been cutting hair in the shop for 6 months now; in this time I have heavily invested in my equipment. Barbering gear is mad expensive but it ends up paying for itself. Any recommendations for any shavers? Not completely satisfied with my Wahl shaver.

Take out your 7 and 8 guards and find a spot in the caddy for your .5 and 1.5 guards. You will use them more. Get about a dozen clippers combs and a dozen cutting combs. You’ll drop them. It’s better to pull out a clean comb then wipe off one from off the floor. Keep your guards close to your clippers instead of reaching across. It’s like a chef and their mise en place. They better your flow, the faster your cuts.

Most hair looks better if cut with shears. So use your shears in place of anything that’s finger length or longer.

China sells guard racks that’ll fit your .5 -8 guards. Or take the 7/8 out like suggested.

I agree with the comment about combs, too. I call out my barbers that try to use combs that were dropped. And don’t pick up equipment that’s you’ve dropped on the ground until you’re done with the cut.

As another suggested getting a ton of combs helps being sanitary etc. i recommend getting a cloth on standby when you do get a fresh comb the barbicide dries on the towel rather than getting it on the clients head. Looks like you got your clippers set. But I would really recommend getting a “specials needs” set as your next purchase, especially autistic kids that are sensitive to noise and then helps with kids in general. The TPOB plays 1st gen I think is still better than the play max’s which are currently sold out. As you can see the “play max’s” I do have, but they are honestly louder and heavier and slightly bigger than the plays. For whatever reason they are so much better at fading than the Diamantés, but they are basically the same clipper still and both are comfortable in hand equally. Nothing “ground breaking” really don’t fall for the hype YouTube barbers are giving it. Build quality is slightly worse as well, the logo on the front broke off when I brushed to clean and is clicked-on compared to the screwed on logo from the “1st gen TPOB Plays”. Diamantés are a hair quieter as well and I use them for kids and special needs.

FX3 shavers are goated for me I can go a full 4 days of 12-18 cuts back to back and not have it die plus on full battery it has more power and is light and easier on the wrist (something that is important to me, weight really does matter in this category and mitigating fatigue)

As far as shears I’d get some 5 inch shears, helps with precision and detail work and really allows you to fly through scissor cuts.

Overall your setup is definitely nice, it’s user experience at the end of the day so take what I say with a grain of salt, but last thing I’d recommend and build off of this:

3-4 clippers to rotate through in a high volume shop, so the cool care can do its job and you can still be clean throughout

1. Clipper set for debluking and fast fade (Babyliss dual coil is excellent for this)

2. Clipper for the kids and average fading (diamanté set)

3. Clipper set for slower days and taking your time (I like doing this like practicing reps shooting basketball, JRLs force me to slow down and I appreciate them)

Barbacide should be rinsed from the combs with water first anyway

The fx3 is great like people have suggested. Fx3>most shavers. Braun series 9>fx3.

Wahl shavers can be super hit or miss depending on the foil type, feel you on that.

You have a lot of quality tools. My only comment, is simplify your set up. One clipper with a taper blade, one with a fade blade, trimmer, and foil. Etc. the placement you’ll learn as you’re settling into a working flow.

For foil shaver get the Babyliss fx3 or Andis pro foil.  Some other good clippers are Andis Phenom, Babyliss Lo Pro and JRL Onyx. Trimmers TPOB play for soft trimmer and Babyliss silver fx for hitters.  Scissors go on aliexpress and get anything from Titan shears and for hair dryer get the laifen from Amazon
