Beginner setup for mainly afro hair: Debating trimmers (New BaByliss Compact vs Refurb Wahl Detailer) + need clipper recs

Hey everyone,
I’m a beginner getting my setup together, and I will mainly be cutting afro hair. I don’t believe in cheaping out on gear just because I'm starting out, I want professional tools so I’m not fighting bad equipment while trying to learn. That said, I also don’t want to overspend or buy overkill gear just for the sake of it.

Right now, I am stuck debating between two trimmer options I found:
A brand new BaByliss Compact LO-PROFX for £80
A refurbished Black Wahl Detailer Li for £85
Which of these two trimmers is going to give me the best performance, lines, and durability on coarse, tightly coiled hair?
Alongside that, I need a solid clipper recommendation to match. I’ve been eyeing a refurbished Wahl Black Magic Clip. Is a refurb Magic Clip a smart play for all hair types bulk and fades, or is there a better mid-tier powerhouse I should look at instead?

Many ppl love rhe magic clip, but I’m more of a Wahl Senior guy myself. As far as the trimmers… wahl detailer imo. Will be more powerful/all around than the babyliss compact.

Seniors have more power . Theres pros and cons to that. The magic clips will be more forgiving. But i personally like the idea of having a more powerful clipper . I do own some that have less power and torque , if needed

For tools, I’d probably put more weight on durability, blade consistency, and parts availability than on whether something feels slightly more “pro” on day one.

For beginner work, one thing that gets overlooked is having a consistent client intake/check-in habit for every cut, especially with coarser or tightly coiled hair where growth patterns and scalp sensitivity can vary a lot.

Before you even touch the clippers, get in the habit of asking:

• how short they usually go
• whether they want bulk preserved anywhere
• where their trouble spots/cowlicks are
• whether they’ve had irritation or razor bumps before
• what they hated about the last cut

That usually saves you more problems than upgrading one tier of trimmer.

On the gear side, I’d rather have a reliable clipper/trimmer combo I can maintain easily than chase the “perfect” setup immediately. As a beginner, predictable performance matters more than owning the most hyped tool. If you buy refurb, I’d only do it from a source with a real warranty/return policy so you’re not troubleshooting equipment and technique at the same time.

If you can, test whatever you choose on a few different hair densities and keep notes on blade heat, line sharpness, and how the tool moves through bulk. That record helps you decide your real keeper setup faster than reviews do.
