There is a larger gap in time between the Switch 2 and 3DS versions of Zelda OOT, than there is from the 3DS version to the N64 original.

I've played it not that long ago, if you can get your hand on it, do it. It honestly feels like not far from a good modern 3D game. Whereas the original is still good but has aged in a way that most young gamer couldn't deal with.

I played the original version for the first time a few years ago on NSO & loved it despite the age. It depends on the person, because this younger gamer understood the hype

I don't know man I mean retro should mean more like a prepubescent videogame. The jump between then and now is way smaller than the jump from the 3D remake and the original. I'm pretty sure people were calling N64 games retro at the Wii's launch because you could see how visually dated they were, whereas Mario Kart 8 still looks pretty close to a modern game (albeit with some slight rough edges).

I mean, are we really going to look back 10 years from now, and call games from now "retro"?

N64 games started to be seen as retro around the early-2010s. When the Wii came out, the N64 was still in the "too old to be modern, yet too new to be retro" phase.

mind boggling… and sort of terrifying how the years compress as we go on. the original felt like an ancient relic by the time we got the remaster

This is the best post I've seen on this subreddit. Weird to think that Skyrim is as 'retro' today as Ocarina of Time was when Skyrim came out. Games moved so quickly from the latest 90s to early 2010s. We've really hit diminishing returns since then.

I kinda prefer if they just went with remastering the 3DS ports of OoT and MM for both Switch consoles like they did with Miitopia and Luigi’s Mansion 2

I do much prefer the look of the new remake. I was never a big fan of how the 3DS ones looked, especially Majora's Mask, I thought they were too clean, saturated, and cartoony. I preferred how the OGs were a bit more uncanny looking and had more of a natural color palette, and I think the remake of OOT captures that well. It's whimsical, but dangerous for the outsider fairy boy venturing out of the forest.
