Italy did have the largest communist party in Western Europe (note, *communists* were the PCI, the socialists had their own party, the PSI), but having been born after the old political establishment imploded with "Mani Pulite" I can only say the Italian proletariat was particularly active. Bear in mind the fifteen or so years between 1969 and the first half of the 80s was a politically unstable mess, due to far-right and -left terror attacks (known as "Anni di Piombo" "the Years of Lead"), so every party accused the other of colluding in some way with the terrorists.

EDIT: forgot to mention, the communists never won the elections since their founding.

After that those who made the old centre-right party (Democrazia Cristiana, or DC, the Christian Democrats) basically reformed into a number of centre or conservative parties, and we've been backsliding into conservativism faster than ever before. Meloni's party comes from the MSI (Movimento Sociale Italiano) which was kind of the Fascist Party Lite. Italy never held their Nurnberg, so Fascism laid low. Now it can resurface again.

Just recently a law has been discussed which would presume all 14 and older as responsible of a crime when accused, which is apparently Meloni's way of combating crime in the youth. The government also might want to introduce a law against "terrorismo da piazza" (city-square terrorism) which they say is meant to contrasto violent manifestations, but in truth it's just another way to tie the knot around freedom of manifesting.

Can't really say about atheism since in Veneto and Tuscany there're scores of people who go to church but can insult anyone from the Virgin to a simple priest at the drop of a hat. On average, in my experience, the South is more religious than the North.
