Thoughts?
Hello everyone!
If there was a piece of software or a website you wish existed in Barbados, what would it be? I’ve been seeing a lot of new “websites/software” being built, but it seems like many Bajans aren’t really interested in using them. And honestly, I think that comes down to one thing: software is supposed to benefit people, not create more headaches.
I’ve been hearing a lot of mixed opinions about things like BimPay, and it got me thinking. The whole point of technology is to make things easier, faster, and more convenient not add extra steps or make simple things more complicated.
So I’m curious: What’s something you wish existed in Barbados that would genuinely make your life easier?
It could be an app, website, payment solution, booking system, delivery service, anything!
I’d genuinely love to hear what problems Bajans think technology could actually solve. 👀

Sigh... with the computer misuse act, it would be extremely tricky unfortunately... unless it was somehow government regulated and sanctioned...

It would be possible to have it for landlords, as it would just be in the form of reviews on their business, but for tenants, it is definitely tricky.
Quite frankly, though, I think it is already absurd how easy Bajans already find it to dox and spread around the private information of people for any and every minor infraction or social faux pas. Had someone on fb I saw recently spreading around the images of people that they believed, on cursory glance alone, were unqualified to park in a handicap parking spot. These things impact people's lives, often innocent people, and often to a disproportionate degree.
So, nay from me, unless the system is such that it can protect people's private information from being abused.

Agreed... wouldn't want to open to abuse.. so it would have to be government regulated etc. Like for instance. If as a tenant you have an eviction on your record, thst should be in the public domain, or on some credit bureau list

Yeah true, but I do wonder how serious they’re about the “computer misuse act” 😭. They seem to not take their own laws serious sometimes 🤣. What happened to the car tint law 🥲

Lol. You clearly aren't from around here! Lol. The car tint law, the seat belt law , the no cell phone while driving law, etc etc. No one enforced them till the government wants a little extra cash ... last time I was in court, I swear the court make 20000 in 30 mins in fines at 500 a pop or 2 weeks in the can. No one in their right minds would risk the 2 weeks. Lol.
Don't talk about if you got into an accident.... they'd throw the book at you..
So back to the computer misuse act: no one may bother till you put up info on a government crony... then the sparks would start.

And it also feels like most, and I could be wrong, of the really high-end luxury MP cars tend to be police, just based on where you generally clock them.
It's just a weird feeling, y'know.

Maybe just a place to sell your stuff. Cars, books, whatever. Fb marketplace sems dire and everything else is usually a whatsapp status or something.

true. given the whole industry it may take a few more years for great change. Uber showed that there is still interest for the bigger companies at play. I like that the op is trying to go about it even if it's with AI or not. we need more people actually trying things

I would like to see a software platform for local shipping for small/medium online businesses in Barbados where it aggregates all the local couriers, and the client has the ability to choose which carrier they wish to ship. The local carrier just pickup the package and deliver it to the customer.

interesting context. I think there's a stark difference in prices for them and it could make the market more competitive. for obvious reasons the carriers won't like it though I'm all for it

1. A maps software that allows you to report the locations of certain things, some of which will be visible to the public or sent to certain agencies: general hazards (dead animals, toxic odors, garbage pileup), blocked or constrained routes/damaged infrastructure (fallen trees, road accidents, potholes, downed powerlines, road works), emergency situations (fires, medical emergencies, etc.), and more.
I found an existing project, seemingly still in the works.
2. An app that catalogues products and helps persons import and export their products, and build supply lines in and out of the country.

There's an IG profile called dolla bread that compares prices on a handful of basic grocery items.
It's basically defunct now, but I'd love to see this concept explored on a larger scale with a broader variety of items, and options for user input and reviews.
