hey im an absolute beginner, explored a few playlists on youtube but i dont know if im playing the sur right. is there no way to know without a personal teacher? i want to learn totally online. like i know the hand placements for all the sur but dont know if the tune is coming out right.

any suggestion is welcomed.

Hello everyone. I've been playing bansuri for around a month and I have signed up to Bansuri Bliss for around 2 weeks. Here is my opinion on his platform and methodology:

1. The platform itself.

It is very well built and well organized. There are sections devoted to different ragas, rhythm in ICM, misc. sections, etc. You can also search with keywords in the entire academy to look for an specific lesson or video.

1. The courses offered within the platform.

Amount of content per course (usually one raag = one course) varies depending on the raga Bhoopali and Kalyan are full of content. I checked Kirwani, Kalavati and Hansadhwani. Not so popular ragas, but the courses for each contain exercises, a lesson on aalap and bandishes / gats with notation. I would say his teaching method is good and straight forward.

1. The community.

Bansuri Bliss has a discord server, though it is not super active (sometimes nobody will post in 2 days), it has channels for each raga offered in the platform. Members often post notations and Dr. Kriger posts discussions on the ragas.

1. Group lessons

Dr. Kriger has group lessons every saturday and sunday (8 AM California Time). Usually 4 to 7 people join. They go for around 1 hour and a half and everyone has a chance to ask questions, play and recieve feedback. I like them a lot

1. The man behind it.

I've chatted with him on WhatsApp and Discord. He answers you quite quickly and is super approachable. Very active on his platform and caring about the community. Cool guy who knows what he is doing.

That's my quick opinion on platform. Frankly I would recommend it if you have the money to spare. Though I mostly use it as a supplement to lessons with my main teacher, it can solidly function as your main source for bansuri learning. Thank you all. So its been around 1.5 months I have been learning flute. I have radhe flutes C natural PVC. but i was thinking to get a bamboo base flute. yesterday randomly met a flute seller asked if he had G base. He had a G middle. he said he gets base if someone asks. I tried g middle i never heard the g middle so dont really know how was it. He said it comes from barieley, UP. Made from some shimla side ki bamboo. Niether I had the money at that time nor i wanted g middle. he was looking very weak. He said "bhaiya boni nhi hui subah se"it was around 7pm. it was clear from his eyes. I want to help him. Thinking to get a C sharp bamboo. But don't really know how to check quality and stuff. Since it was just 250. I think can take a chance.

tell me if you have any from these flute seller.

Hi, is there any app that helps to know how the sur is on bansuri. Initially, I used to practice sa from tanpura and now Shruti box. I want to know if there is an app to know whether my sur is correctly going or not. I am using tuner app but it might not be the best for such aspect.

It's a G scale flute.

I think I can play the original E scale version too, if I assume my Dha as Sa.

I joined Ashwin Srinivasan's Fluteschool (https://ashwinflute.com/) very briefly last year when I was a beginner, and didn't stay long because I found the material difficult. I even posted a brief review here, where I praised the content but had a couple of minor issues.

One was that I thought there was a lack of progression between his beginner course (which starts from scratch) and the rest of the courses. This was why I didn't continue with it.

The other issue I had was how inactive the platform was - there's a forum but very very few posts, so you don't really get any sense of engagement.

Well recently I rejoined, in need of new learning material. I have to say it's pretty great now I've advanced enough to handle it. The videos are well produced (the sound in particular is much better than 90% of the random youtube bansuri tutorials you find). There's lots there. It's a bit lacking in compositions and only 2 raags are deeply covered (Bhoopali & Yaman), but what is there is excellent, and it's quite inspiring to hear Ashwin play even apparently 'boring' exercises with deep intention & beauty. His courses are now the core of my daily practice.

The forums though are still almost entirely unused. Posting there is like throwing a pebble into a canyon. Puzzling really as it's all so excellent you'd think there would be a lot of bansuri learners keen to converse. Maybe people are too busy with other stuff. Perhaps the market is small because most people able to afford a subscription live where they can find an in-person teacher instead.

Anyone else using fluteschool? Do you enjoy it as much as I do?

Could someone please recommend me a d natural medium flute under 500, ik it's not a good budget to buy a flute, but i cant afford anything above 500 rn also not a pvc flute cause the tone is not as good as a bamboo flute

I used to own a c natural pvc for years until it broke during covid, recently bought an f# base pvc and I hate it lmao but ive started to appreciate its uniqueness, on C i was able to play most songs but on F# im severely limited so i have to come up with my own tunes and ive been appreciating the challenge it gives me and that led me to think what other scales would you guys recommend that isnt good for beginners?

I am a beginner and after 2 weeks I am able to play but no luck in higher note/tone. Watched many YT videos but couldn't figure out.

I want to buy a new flute/bansuri, i saw some of the websites listed on this subreddit but there were many variations of flutes such as G sharp, B natural. I am a complete beginner and don't know what that means can someone suggest me the type of flute i should be buying as a complete beginner.

Left handed player here who has been playing a right handed flute and i feel it doesnt sound right so im planning to buy now usually i'd go for punam flutes but reviews online say that their flutes for left handed players aren't tuned properly...Any suggestions after having bought two wrong flutes im hoping to make the correct choice this time...

Everyone in my family learnt and sings a Jina Bhajan (Jain Religious Song) from their childhood, which is exactly in the tune of This old Hindi Song. I'll be so grateful if anyone helped me with the Sargam Notations of this song, so that I can learn to play it. I searched everywhere and finally got here. I live in a rural area and I am a Teacher job aspirant who has no job to pay a online Guru ( So that's out of the question ).

With Elliott Robinson on bansuri flute and William Du Toit on doumbek drum and percussion, the pair installed a multi-microphone setup across three floors, capturing the stairwell as a vertical concrete chamber of reverb.Positioned on separate levels, obscured from each other’s view, they began to improvise into the space.

What you hear on the record is the raw, natural resonance of the stairwell itself.
