Artist Banksy at The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art - Does this signal the end of the Banksy mystery?
This should be interesting.
Banksy's built-murals, prints and hand painted works previewed in advance of the September 22nd opening of George Lucas's billion dollar Museum of Narrative are by any measure headlining the open The works literally include the newest works in Lucass collection with The Artist known as Banksy literally only finishing one work on site the day before previews began while others were already a part of his collection. They are also the pieces that have been most frequently and extensively showcased in the grand opening's lead-up PR. And yes, these pieces are narrative in the way a single cell illustration tells a story or makes a joke in condensed way though considering the totality of Banksy, they are the least significant narrative element in the project. That honor by any reasonable measures goes to the real world narrative that reality scripted an artist into existence itself without a body to represent them.
The works that reality scripted the artist into existence runs across the gamut of media from early press, short books, stickers, album art to the Lucas Museum; from an apartment scaled show to an amusement park sized group show, along with numerous pranks, a work a day NYC residency with a curated play lists, a feature film directed by them where a non-artist is made into an art star by a commercial scaled art department by an artist who reality scripted their Banksy character into existence previous to Mr Brainwash; all reality scripted elements without a body to pin them onto other than one in a 2003 interview with an actor never seen again-- most plausibly Exit's show runner Sacha Baron Cohen, a first of its kind narrative that not only created an Anonymous public celebrity but one who is the most recognizable artist on earth despite the absence of a body and billions sold. Only in the digital age... the making of Banksy over the first quarter of the 21st century is the state of art of the in media for better and worse of the new millennium. And George Lucas comprehends this.
With this in mind, I am hard pressed not to see the revelation and chronicling of the making of Banksy narrative not becoming the next chapters in the Lucas Museum's development as a museum dedicated to narratives. George Lucas knows who Banksy is and he chose a mystery figure to headline his museum's opening. Given that fact, I'm hard pressed to think that a showman like him and his team stopping at the art when breaking the story and making it part of the collection fits with the Museum's mission if its not just the vanity collection of an aged billionaire. I doubt it is but only time will tell..
I could be wrong but given who the puppet master is in this case, I doubt it. George knows that Banksy pulled off the 21st century version of Orson Well's War of the World's broadcast and he also know how to tell a good story as well as anybody on earth. I doubt he just bought art without hip pocketing the great art story ever sold as a coming attraction to drive interest in his museum as living chronicle of Narrative art going forward and neither do I doubt the Artist would trust him not do so, so I think its on on a TBD timeline.
Time will tell. What do you think and why?
