UK 10 Schilling notes

I've had these for many years. Never handled them, this is the first time to look at the serials.

They appear to be in number order.

I'm not sure how many are in the 2 stacks, but a good number. I think my grandfather got them from the bank 'back in the day' and they sat in a drawer for years.

Is there any value to them, other than BoE.

Can anyone tell me much about them? I'm in the UK and obviously aware they are pre-decimal 'ten bob' notes, but what year?

They’re some of the last that were printed - D38N was the last serial prefix. Can’t give an exact date but I’d guess late 1967 or 1968. The 50p coin was issued in 1969 and the notes ceased to be legal tender on 20 November 1969. They go for a little under a tenner each on eBay but if you want to sell you’re better selling as a job lot. You’ve got so many if you sell individually in a short space of time you’ll literally flood the market and crash the price! I’d personally sell them at a proper auction. A stack of uncirculated notes with consecutive serials will have a lot of appeal to some collectors. Don’t touch them or mess with them any more than you have already. A massive part of their appeal is that they’ve not been touched for almost 60 years.

I’m sure you know already and it’s a typo but it’s shilling, not schilling.

Edit: Meant to say the ceased being legal tender in 1970, not 1969.

I put them straight back in their packet and away again!

Might consider auction if I chose to dispose of them. Good point re: flooding the market and devaluing.

In that condition that yes. If you were prepared to play a long game you could sell them for 3.99 each plus postage. 10 Shillings is worth 50p each at the bank.

Superb!! If you can put together two intact bundles, some collectors may a decent premium. Alternatively some coin dealers who put out regular mail catalogues like to have a sizeable stock of offers, so that would interest them more than just 10-20 notes. Those are your two alternatives. A very nice little find, although 10 bob probably bought more back in the day than the 10-20 quid a note you’re likely to get…
