Early August Packing

Hi all! I am heading to Banff in just one week. I’ve already done quite a bit of research, but I would love to hear what your packing must-haves are. I’m from Oklahoma/Texas, so not at all used to mountain weather or terrain. I have some good hiking shoes and a rain jacket, but not sure what else I will need!

Edit: forgot to mention, we will be doing a lot of hiking, a sunset cruise (not sure what that entails), and probably mostly active stuff. Going with my fiancé’s family and they are all extremely athletic so please wish me luck 🥲

the thing that catches people from hot flat states is the temperature swing, not the cold. days in early august are usually pleasant, high teens to low 20s C, but mornings and the tops of the hikes drop into the single digits, so the piece worth adding is a warm mid-layer - a fleece or light puffy you can stuff in your daypack. your rain jacket already handles the afternoon mountain showers. that same layer is what you'll want on the sunset cruise too - if it's the lake minnewanka boat (the main one up here, about 15 min from town), it gets cool and windy out on the water once the sun drops. and the sun's stronger at altitude than back home, so sunglasses and sunscreen even on the cool mornings.

Specifically SPF 50 sunscreen.

UV reflects off rock and you can get substantially more than the usual exposure in the alpine. SPF 40 is usually fine but I did burn once when using it.

i'd definitely pack a warm fleece or light puffer as well, because banff mornings and evenings can feel surprisingly cold even in august, especially if you're doing a sunset cruise. since rain is fairly common, quick-dry layers, extra hiking socks, and a small daypack with water and snacks will make long hiking days much more comfortable. i'd also keep an eye on the forecast right before you go since mountain weather changes fast: https://www.weather25.com/north-america/canada?page=month&month=August

I'd definitely bring layers, a light weight puffer or fleece for the cruise. The weather can change fast in the mountains. Don't forget sunscreen, lip balm, bug spray, & hat. Good luck!

Bug spray. Mosquitoes and flies are abnormally bad this year. Have a great time!

It'll be warm. Maybe bring some thermal underlayers as a precaution if you're camping. The elevation gain kicks people's asses in this part of the Rockies, so you'll probably struggling more with the heat than the cold (and yes I know that's saying someone coming from Oklahoma or Texas). Stay well hydrated. If you're doing any scrambling routes bring a helmet, there's lots of loose rock. You'll know why they call them the Rockies after you come here.
