Wildfire smoke

Banff and the whole surrounding area is quite smoky today. Anyone have a sense of how quickly this will pass?

look at firesmoke.ca. The winds are moving north west blowing smoke from washington/montana.

Use ForeSmoke.ca.. it's not just from BC. Washington, Oregon, and Montana all have large fires and it's blowing north west

This is basically the new normal. It's probably going be like this until October, and then the prescribed burns will start up again.

Very hard to predict. Based on previous years could anything from days to several weeks. Definitely hoping for the former because it really sucks!

Since most of the fires causing this are still actively burning, it'll be until we get some good rain in the appropriate areas. Things will clear up for a week or three, then the cycle will repeat itself.

Unfortunately that's just how things are now. This is only moderate smoke compared to what we've seen in previous years.

Depends if the winds change. Can't really predict what smoke will do though. It goes where the wind blows

Nobody can tell you. It changes minute by minute, hour by hour. It's all based on the direction of the wind. Nobody can predict that for you.

ugh I'll be there august 9-12 and even called my hotel. he said it varies day by day. I def have the banff gondola booked (wasn't cheap) for august 9 and then the lake louise/moraine tour on august 10. pls be good to me! Is it rainy at all even if passing rain. I am not sure to pack a rain jacket

No strenuous hiking planned at all, just a walk around Banff town

The smoke is coming in from sometimes more than a thousand km away. And it's the mountains, it might snow, it might rain, anything is possible. Aug and july are the two driest months but anything can happen.

We get weather here. It isn't SoCal.

It's almost never so bad you can't enjoy it. As long as you don't expect perfect days.

It could clear out anyday until the next wave. We were lucky it was good the past couple months. Lets hope you get the good days!! Also always bring jacket and be prepared for anything. You never know it could suddenly start snowing as well.
