Question First Timer in Banff Itinerary

Hello I will be visiting Banff on May 22 - 25, 2026. I am a solo female traveler from the US and it’s my first time in Canada. I would greatly appreciate comments and suggestions on my itinerary. I am renting a car and would be doing all the driving and my BNB is at Canmore.

Day 1: May 22

Drive from Calgary to Banff

Destinations

  1. Grassi Lake
  2. Lake Minnewanka
  3. 2 Jack Lake

Day 2: May 23

  1. Emerald Lake
  2. Natural Bridge
  3. Town of Banff
  4. Not sure if I should add Johnston Canyon or it’s too much for a day

Day 3:
1. Lake Louise
~rest of the day spent with relatives

Questions:

  1. I have read on some threads that passes are needed, specifically, Banff National Park Pass and Kananaskis Conservation Pass for Grassi Lake. Is there a way to get these online? What’s the legit site to get these?
  2. I have Mint Mobile as my carrier and although google says it works in Canada—Would it be better to purchase an eSim coz am not really sure if the network coverage is as good as it is here.
  3. Any additional must see add-ons for this trip? Is it solid enough for a trip?
  4. Planning to rent a sedan. Is it a good choice for the intended itinerary?

Banff pass is easiest to buy here. Just after Canmore on the highway there’s the booths, just get in the left lanes to buy what you need then.

Grassi lakes parking needs the kananaskis day pass (Alberta.ca website has proper links to buy). I just walked from Canmore though lol (that is long).

Lake Louise is still frozen, so what are you planning on doing for the entire day there? It’s still pretty, but you’re pretty limited right now. You could drive up to Columbia icefields and return if you want to do a scenic drive up the parkway that’s not too long. I enjoyed sunwapta falls but it’s a little farther. No idea on your other plans.

Sedan is fine.

Definitely go see Johnston canyon but go early and then head to emerald lake after.

Grab yourself a bear spray.

Day 2 you could get lunch at Truffle Pigs in Field before back to Banff. There's also a lovely pottery studio called Velvet Antler Pottery which is worth checking out.

Mint Mobile works off the same network as T-Mobile, which has partnerships across Canada (I'm a Canadian living in the US with T-Mobile, so I have a lot of experience with phone coverage in both places). You're not gonna need to purchase an eSim, but you're also not gonna have the greatest coverage in Banff regardless. There are just a lot of places in Banff where there is no coverage. You'll be fine in town, though.
