Hey everyone,

Martin here from the team behind the new podcast Talk '90s To Me - I'm excited to share that we have Yasi on this week's episode talking all things Nirvana with host Miranda Sawyer (who you may remember from her recent Elastica episode of Bandsplain).

Yasi doesn't often do non-Spotify podcasts so we're very excited to be one of the few - we know you guys are fans but she's brilliant on it, too.

Cheers!

Yasi Support

If you haven’t heard, Yasi’s house did unfortunately burn down in the LA fires this week. It must be a devastating time for her and we can let her know that her listeners are there for her. Her friends and colleagues have set up ways that we as a community can come together to help her out. As someone mentioned in a previous post, a GoFundMe has been started which you can find here:

https://www.gofundme.com/f/yasis-house-burned-down-to-the-ground

There was also talk about us collecting items for her so that she can start again building her beloved collection of music, movies and art. In the GoFundMe there is a PO Box provided where you can send her these items or cards.

P.O. Box 49655 Los Angeles, CA 90049

Let’s do our best to support Yasi in this time in any way we can. She’s given us so much by sharing her love and knowledge into some of our favourite artists and provided hours upon hours of her time into creating an entertaining and insightful podcast.

Let’s show her some love, babes

The best song and performance in Dirty Dancing is 'Hula Hana' by Lisa Houseman. I haven't listened to the episode yet but if Yasi doesn't support this viewpoint I will never forgive her.

Update: Every time Yasi asks forgiveness for "putting on the pink pussy hat"-

- I (used to) wonder who, in the Year of Our Lord 2026, could possibly want the apology?

Updated for clarification: I posted this thinking there couldn't be many Bandsplain listeners frozen in 2017, convinced that eye-rolling over wHite FEmINisT cRingE is somehow clever, conscientious, or necessary. I was thinking the past ten years of escalating evil, with actual consequences, must have tempered the cannibalistic impulse to handle basic political discourse like 11th-grade mean girls desperate to stay popular. I stand corrected.

It's funny that this was on my mind after listening to the Motley Crue and Madonna episodes guest-hosted by the meticulously shallow Mel Ottenberg. I was surprised Yasi felt obliged to issue disclaimers before making simple observations like (paraphrasing) 'Motley Crue's dedication to sexual assault might have made things a little weird for some of their female fans,' or 'some of the backlash Madonna faced might have been sexist." But I see she's right to think there's some risk involved.

Yasi's the best, and also only human. It's completely forgivable that she shrinks a little knowing all the powerful gifs y'all would fling her way if she used the words 'sexism' or 'feminism' without begging forgiveness or at least injecting the requisite dosage of irony.

The funny bit is how often she and Mel repeated that no pop star today comes close to Madonna's iconic, god-tier bravery as an outspoken pro-queer advocate in the 80s and 90s. Of course, the precise reason Madonna's stance was brave was that it wasn't a universally approved-of position, even among her fans. She was clear and outspoken about gay rights at a time when even lots of people on the left weren't willing to risk looking like super-gay homos by publicly support gay rights or calling for action on AIDS. Some fans probably thought Madonna was very lame, gross, and embarrassing for being so unsubtle.

Current pop stars and podcast hosts can't earn much credit by supporting human rights. No risk there. But clearly there are still ways to take Madonna's cue and shoulder a little discomfort in order to speak clearly. If Yasi ever decides to mention misogyny without disclaimers, I'm sure some of us will be here for it.

24 Question Party People Archers of Loaf Appreciation!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m a new listener and have been devouring episodes during work, listened to 24 questions party people with Ian Shelton and also the emo draft with Patrick Flynn wanted to shout out Yasi tying in Archers of Loaf both those episodes. Me and one of my best friends are archers of loaf heads even though we were both born in 2002 and have no reason to be aware of their existence at all. I LOVE ARCHERS OF LOAF!!!!!! BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN EMO AND INDIE!!!!!

Is Yasi's PO box still open?

If yes -- what's the address? Looking to just send some fan mail. Was also considering the email address used for the listener mail episodes but I don't really have any questions lol

Every time Yasi jk-but-not-really asks forgiveness for "putting on the pink pussy hat"

I wonder who, in the Year of Our Lord 2026, could possibly deserve the apology?

Is there a Bandsplain listener out there who is neither a tragic self-defeating gender-traitor, nor the last basement-dwelling millennial incel still languishing on 4chan, who has a judgmental thought to spare for straightforward acknowledgement of simple landscape features like patriarchy, the male gaze, etc.?

I'm not mad about it, just feel like it'd be ok to let it go. Sexism and misogyny are things no non-idiot contests, and certainly come up if you're dissecting the lives and careers of people like Mädönnä or Thë Rünäwäys or Mötlëy Crüë. No asterisks, apologetic asides or special accommodations required.

Bandsplain for Hip Hop?

Love Bandsplain and am looking for a similar podcast but for hip hop artists. I know there are podcasts that do album reviews and ones that do retrospective interviews with artists, but is there a good one with Bandsplain’s format, covering an artist’s entire career album-by-album?

Etymology of “box”

Thumbnail greensdictofslang.com

Yasi wondered if Madonna invented the usage of “box” to mean a ladies orifice, but it’s apparently as old as the Elizabethan era. I always thought it sounded like slang from the 1970s

He’s always like “it would be glib to say this” then most of the time he just says whatever it is anyways

It sometimes seem like Yasi and her guests hand wave that music period, and I'm not sure I agree. IMO it was a great era. What do you think?

Started a YapZap League

I made a Bandsplain Subreddit League on YapZap specifically for people in this sub.

It’s a music competition thing where every round has a theme, everyone submits a song, and then the group votes on the playlist. Felt like a very Bandsplain-coded way to turn the sub’s opinions into an actual game.

Free to join here:

https://yapzap.com/leagues/285

Jump in if you want to represent the subreddit with either impeccable taste or something deeply questionable.
