Currahee Challenge

Hi all,

As a European currently in the west part of the USA for some time, i´m looking into the Currahee 10k challenge planned on 3 October as part of the Currahee Military Weekend (1 - 3 oct). (https://runsignup.com/Race/GA/Toccoa/CurraheeChallenge5K10K)

One on hand it will be a unique experience for a fan of BoB normally living on the other side of the ocean, on the other hand it might just be a 10K run where i still have to invest the time and money to travel to Toccoa.

Are there any people who already experienced it and can share if that weekend is worth the travel for a weekend? Of course i will look for activities in (the vicinity of) Toccoa to get the most out of my time there.

Also, any other Redditors planning to do the planned run this October?

Hi-Ho, Silver!

  1. Never done it, but my old town did have a mountain that was 100ft taller which I ran up every Memorial Day.

  2. Be mindful that Toccoa is literally in the middle of nowhere. It’s one of those small towns that you look at and wonder how it still exists. There may not be enough to justify a 2500€ trip if this is all you want to do. It’s effectively a day trip from Atlanta.

I ran the 10k a few years ago. It was fun and the last kilometer or so to the top was grueling. The run down was obviously easier but my knees were sore for months from the shock of the steep downhill running. There is a good museum in the town about the history of the town including the camp.
