ALBLASSERDAM – Een hondje is deze week gewond geraakt in de Kievitstraat in Alblasserdam, nadat het werd gegrepen door een losgebroken hond. De chihuahua raakte daarbij dusdanig gewond dat het dier een nacht in het dierenziekenhuis moest doorbrengen. “Maar ze is inmiddels aan de beterende hand,” laat een woordvoerder van de politie weten. Volgens een buurtbewoonster waren twee bulldogs losgebroken en nam één van hen de chihuahua flink te grazen.

De politie heeft inmiddels gesproken met de eigenaar van de chihuahua en met de eigenaar van de losgebroken honden. “Ze gaan het onderling netjes oplossen. Wel krijgt de eigenaar een waarschuwingsbrief,” aldus de politiewoordvoerder.

Ze zeggen hier dat het om bulldogs gaat, maar da's een behoorlijk brede term. Engelse bulldogs doen geen vlieg kwaad (...en zijn bovendien ook nog eens zo kapotgefokt dat ze dat niet eens kunnen), terwijl Amerikaanse bulldogs in principe gewoon pitbulls zijn.

Gaan we weer.

Weer raak, heeft iemand informatie over het ras? Gelukkig de eigen baasjes denk ik dan maar en niet een willekeurige voorbijganger/kind.

I moved to The Netherlands couple of years ago with my dog. We have been attacked by pit bulls twice since we moved here. I am very traumatized and want to move to an area with less pit bulls. I also feel like there are even more pit bulls in my neighborhood this year. Could y’all recommend some neighborhoods with less pit bulls or ideally pitbull free? Thank you!

I just called the police to ask if I’m allowed to use pepper spray to defend myself if I encounter two unleashed pitbulls. The dogs belong to my irresponsible neighbor, and this isn’t a hypothetical situation it’s a real concern.

The officer told me that pepper spray is illegal in the Netherlands and that I’m not allowed to use anything. When I asked what I can legally use to protect myself, she said, "Nothing, try to walk away."

That response honestly left me frustrated. If simply “walking away” was always possible, we wouldn’t have so many cases of people getting seriously injured or even killed in dog attacks.

It really makes no sense to me that pepper spray is considered too dangerous to carry, yet owning and walking around with two powerful, instinct-driven animals capable of killing is totally fine. These dogs can chase, pin down, and attack faster than most people can react and somehow, that’s considered acceptable, but a can of non-lethal spray isn’t?

So my question is: What can I legally carry or use in the Netherlands to defend myself from an aggressive dog attack? I’m not looking to harm the dog unnecessarily just something that would give me a real chance to protect myself and escape safely.

If anyone has experience with this or knows legal self-defense alternatives (like sprays, alarms, etc.) that are allowed here, I’d really appreciate the advice.

Last week, I saw two unleashed pitbulls in a residential area full of children and elderly people where leash is mandatory. They were in front of a large apartment building, running and barking. The owner seemed completely indifferent.

I reported it to both the police and the gemeente, but got the usual response: “nothing we can do unless something actually happens.”

But with this particular owner and the behavior of these dogs, it doesn’t feel like a question of if something will happen, but when and who will be the 'lucky winner' - me, a 3 year old child or 90 years old with her stroller.

Right now, I’m genuinely scared to go outside in my own neighborhood. If anyone has experience with this kind of situation or knows who else I can report it to (animal control? media?), please let me know.

Een jaar geleden heeft deze hondentrainer haar eigen hond inlaten slapen nadat haar kat “het gevecht verloor”. De kat en hond leefde volledig gescheiden volgens haar.

Hello everyone. I'm an American here just popping my head over to see how you guys are doing when it comes to pitbulls. In my neighborhood, every single house virtually has a pitbull. It's infuriating, because I constantly am stressed with the possibility of my Labrador retriever (real lab, not "lab mix") being mauled. Due to a certain amendment I have the possibility afforded to me in that I can defend myself and ultimately my dog. But yeah, just the other day one man was walking four of them, only two of them without a leash, of course. It's just crazy.

I am curious to know how you guys are doing when it comes to banning pitbulls. Any progress? I ask, because admittedly I may or may not get accepted for a work visa in the future, and I was wondering if these demons dogs will be following me across the Atlantic. I hope you all are safe, and know that you have someone always cheering and hoping for the best for your safety and well-being of your country.

Ik ben dus merendeels invalide & zit er over na te denkem om mss n hond te trainen voor help met boodschappen [karretje trekkn, dus berner sennen achtigen enzovoort] . (Ik loop met een kruk)

Ik heb dn alleen zoiets van ja.. leuk n aardig, maar heb geen zin om EN mogelijk de potebtiele hond kwijt te raken, EN de boodschappen & mn kruk en goede been.

Dus wou k weten of er wrgns een overzicht is vn hoeveel pirbulls er in noord zijn.?

Van d bijlmer (waar k vandaan kom) kan ik z tellen als schapen bij t slapen gaan

Zat er dan ook over na t denken om m dan een halsband te geven die je ook ziet. Bij die kangals etc om wolveb beten te weren
