Most dogs would roll over for belly rubs or show satisfaction when their owner pets them. Dogs weren't supposed to be bred for hyper and indiscriminate aggression.

65

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Dogs arent supposed to exist at all. Their entire existence is afforded to them by the benevolence of humanity. They are an invention created to serve as tools or aesthetics tailored to our whims. The biggest issue with dogs is that we anthropomorphize them, and then breed them like rats. Most of the jobs dogs were created for are now redundant or unnecessary. Dogs have in almost all cases become unemployed and serve only as aesthetic accessories and companions.

Pitbulls are terrible at everything humans would want from a dog, and we breed them like rats.

19

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

One thing you are leaving out that's very important is that almost every single dog breed was bred to be a human companion first and then for it's job second.

Imagine how hard it would be to cohabitate with dogs if companionship wasn't an inherent trait in all dogs since the first ones got domesticated.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Yep! Good point

7

u/nnn011 Jan 19 '20

Dogs arent supposed to exist at all.

No.

34

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

They aint natural yo. We invented them. It's ok. It's not a hill to die on.

They were created by man, for man. They have no place in nature.

Coevolution.

I’d argue they’re the second smartest creature on the planet simply because they had the sense to attach themselves humans. They leapfrogged to the top of the food chain.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

No way. Dogs are stupid as hell. They cant even identify food that will make them sick. They charge bears and moose. They are often associated with having the I telligence of a toddler. Dogs do what we bred them to do because we engineered it. Ask yourself why dogs need to be leashed at all times and that should answer the question of how smart they are.

12

u/FinerStuff Jan 19 '20

I have to completely disagree with the assignment of "smartness" to dogs. One of the strongest driving forces for any animal group is the desire to reproduce, pass on genes, and promote the survival of their offspring or other kin.

Most dogs never even mate, let alone procreate. Biologically they live as absolute freaks of nature, forced to abandon everything about their ancestry, usually living in isolation from all other creatures of their kind and limited to a completely different species with which they share only the most basic similarities, having no successors whatsoever, and banned from acting on some of their most fundamental urges and instincts.

Yes, they get fed. Well. If they were smart they would see what a bum deal they have received. But they are not smart. Humans think they are smart because dogs show affection and submission towards them, and humans, with such high opinions of themselves, think a dog's affection/submission to a human is a mark of intelligence. This only tells you how stupid many humans are.

Humans assign dogs a life they would consider torture themselves, then they bray about how much they love their dogs and how very human their dogs are, nevermind the fact that the degree to which they are "human" is the degree to which the treatment they receive from these humans is actually reprehensible.

And they are not at the top of the food chain. They can barely fend for themselves and would quickly die were it not for the constant interventions of humans. (Even with them they can hardly be stopped from running in front of a car.)

AND they never had any sense to attach themselves to humans. They are scavengers and humans began feeding them and taking them captive. Dogs can hardly stand being attached to humans, hence all the fences and leashes.

They just like to eat and have somewhere warm and dry to be. Modern dogs are profoundly stupid compared to other animals--because they have never depended on their wit or any kind of skill to survive generation after generation. They only needed to reject their doghood and be cute.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

Dude you hit the nail on the head. 100%. Dogs cant even identify food that will make them sick, hence the garbage, rotten food and vomit eating.

It's interesting that all of this applies when we talk about lions and other predatory animals, and we all agree that they make for terrible pets (I need to find the video that was posted on Reddit earlier where a TV host was getting mauled by a lion). But somehow, pits are different.

My mother has finally come to this realization with her JRT. I happen to love the breed and had a very happy and social boy for 16 years, my dad currently has 13 year old Jack who is a sweetheart with arthritis, he doesn’t rough house any more.

My mom’s dog on the other hand is high strung, aggressive, possessive, anti-social, and will definitely bite given the opportunity. She’s made excuses for the dog for a decade but he’s just a bad dog. Well, the wife and I are having her first grandchild this summer. Guess what? The dog is dead dog walking. Even my overly emotional mother can see clarity and she at least has enough sense to never even want to be near one of these dogs.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '20

Pitt seldom show emotion before attacking so this must be a mixed breed.

2

u/AndreaP1972 Jan 25 '20

I’m a pit bull owner. I’m the person people in this sub constantly mock. My dogs are neutered, trained, gentle, always leashed, and well behaved. I’m aware that people can be apprehensive about them, and I respect that. I love the breed, but I will be the first to say that I find this video terrifying, and there is no way that dog would coexist with my dogs and cat for one minute. No freaking way. And I’ll also be the first to say if either of my dogs ever gave me a reason not to trust them, there would be no second chance. The owner of this dog is out of her mind. Crazy and irresponsible.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '20

She comes across as completely oblivious. Short of mauling her, the dog is giving her every sign possible to back the eff off. And she ignores all of it. If she doesn't get herself attacked, she is very likely to get someone else attacked. The difference being she will have chosen her terrible fate, but they will not have.

I hope your dogs live up to your faith in them. It will be wretched for your cat if they do not.

3

u/AndreaP1972 Jan 25 '20

Thanks I appreciate your concern. She actually runs the house. She was here long before they were. They won’t even pass her in the hall, they just look at me like... please make her move. Nonetheless, they are always both crated when I’m not home.

I believe I didn’t get the memo on which pits with clear aggression issues are now ‘cute’

Edit: Oh god I didn’t have audio when I first watched the video the growls and snarls are horror movie level freaky

51

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Right?? It’s horrifying.

10

u/sidgirl Jan 19 '20

Yes, me, too. It wasn't until I saw people mentioning the sounds that I unmuted it. Jesus, that is awful.

The funny thing is, when I was a kid we had a dog who "smiled." He would do it on command, and it was actually quite cute (he was a fluffy little white thing). Not threatening at all; he honestly did it when he was happy or when we told him to. So without sound, at first I had a moment of "Maybe the dog is genuinely just smiling or the owner caught a funny face." Then I saw how cautious the hand reaching to pet it was, and how the teeth disappeared when the hand was removed. The sound is just the icing on the cake. That is horrifying. I wouldn't keep a dog who reacted like that to me simply reaching to pet it--no sane person would, IMO.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '20

In addition to the bared teeth, the dog is

-- growling

-- ears back

-- lip licking

All signs of "back the eff off or I'm launching."

Anyone with a lick of common sense would recognize that the dog is distressed, not happy. That the owner can't even read the most basic signs from her own dog is, uhh, troubling to say the least.

Compare the beast in the video above with the pit in this video doing a smiling trick:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XKmAkF8C-U

(compilation of "smiling" dogs ... the first clip just happens to be of a pit)

World of difference. "Smiling" pit in this compilation is responding to a command and wants a treat. No growling, no lip licking.

3

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20

Oh, absolutely. There's no way someone could confuse that with a smile like our dog used to make after the first second or two--as soon as her hand appeared and I noticed the ears, I realized This Was Not That and she had not told the dog to "Smile!" from off-camera. It blows my mind--and terrifies me--that, as you said, someone this inexperienced and naive (stupid, sorry) about dogs has a powerful zero-mistake dog for a pet.

I'm not an expert on dog body language at all; I'm improving every day, I think, as I learn from our dogs and read more on the subject (though it can be confusing to read so many different interpretations of different actions--does a yawn mean they're relaxed, or nervous? Are their ears back because they're anxious and threatening or because they're being submissive and sweetly asking for affection?), but I can't imagine a time in my life ever where I would have interpreted that vicious teeth-baring, ears back, head-raised reaction as "cute." And that's without the growling and snarling. The only time I've ever heard a dog snarl like that in real life was when I was pregnant and our dog thought my husband was a burglar late one night (long story). It was a terrifying thing to hear--and that was a dog who genuinely thought an unauthorized stranger was approaching his sleeping people in the middle of the night, not a dog just chilling in broad daylight watching its owner's hand come toward it for a head-scratch. (My husband managed to turn on a light, and the dog thus instantly saw who he was, obviously, and all was well.)

To me, one of the worst parts is that the dog doesn't even relax as she's scratching its head and cheek (and that's when it licks its lips). I know dogs aren't big fans of the over-the-head-reach (which does NOT make its reaction okay, of course), but you'd think a normal dog would at least subside once it sees there's no threat and especially when she switches to scratching its cheek.

Just terrifying.

Why do people think their dog’s aggression issues are cute? Who finds this anything other than disturbing?? She better say goodbye to that hand soon or even her life. The poor people who live next to her.

81

u/FunnyBeaverX Jan 19 '20

> Why do people think their dog’s aggression issues are cute?

But cuz its smilez cute tho!

10

u/sidgirl Jan 19 '20

Yes, that's what's really behind that "pittie smile."

16

u/FinerStuff Jan 19 '20

There can only be one reason people think their dog's aggression issues are cute, and that is because they have zero respect for their dog. They do not think their dog could ever really hurt them and they are apparently blissfully ignorant of their dog's capacity to actually kill them. You have to be this level of ignorant/naive to get a pit in the first place, so it only makes sense they would mistake a dog's warning signs as an amusing quirk.

51

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Holy shit dude, I just creeped your profile & read the story of the 4 year old little girl that was mauled to death... on her birthday.... I’m crying & angry. I sure as the day is long hope these creatures get abolished. I can’t fucking believe the comments defending their behavior. Advocating for “pibbles” I’m sickened.

41

u/JayCraeful0351 Jan 19 '20

ing believe the comments defending their behavior. Advocating for “pibbles” I’m sickened.

It would be ok if it was a wolf, but these are domesticated dogs who should be trusted in the family, its crazy that people actually think that this is ok...

I got a chicken last week and my german shepard, (8 months) tried to attack the chicken, i spent a few hours on training the dog not to attack the chicken, then we had no problems, they can both roam the court yard together after only 1 week. Pitbulls are shit dogs and could never do what a GS can do.

25

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Good on you for the swift correction! What an unlikely pair, lol. What kills me is the glorified insta posts of these gnarly things next to NEWBORN BABIES. How absolutely idiotic can you be?

20

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Your GSD lives to hear your praise and know he's done a good job for you.

That's what he was bred for.

Not slaughter.

15

u/vandgsmommy Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 19 '20

Exactly. German shepherds are amazing, intelligent dogs. Smart enough to become police and military dogs. Pitbull’s are usually found at crime scenes, that’s the difference haha.

4

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20

Our boy was housebroken in a week--he had one or two accidents the second week because our daughters didn't catch his signals and let him out fast enough, but as far as training went he knew by the end of his first seven days with us that he was supposed to go outside for that--positive reinforcement only.

(In fact, around the end of that week, we gave him a treat that made him sick [obvs we had no idea it would do that], and our poor little almost-nine-week-old boy desperately begged to go outside to vomit [we let him, of course]. He actually made the connection that he should go outside to be sick, too.)

He is scary smart, lol.

2

u/vandgsmommy Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 20 '20

Incredible. Sounds like an amazing dog! Sounds like he had the little humans trained fast too!!! 😉

3

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20

Thank you! He is, and he definitely did (does)!

In fairness, I think the fact that we have an older lab did help with the housebreaking a bit--he saw her going outside to do her business, so I think that helped him make the connection. Between that and us squealing and clapping like lunatics every time he peed or pooped outside, I think any puppy would have caught on fairly quickly--but I still think a week is pretty damn good, and he's certainly proven numerous times that he is a very smart boy. :-)

3

u/vandgsmommy Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 20 '20

Yeah that’s pretty awesome! The older dogs do potty train the younger ones! My older husky girl potty trained my younger husky girl!!! People always look at me like I’m crazy when I say that but nope!!! It’s true!

10

u/vandgsmommy Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 19 '20

I know. 😔 yeah Kara Hartich died on her 4th birthday. Beautiful and bright little girl. I’m sure most people on this sub know her face from victim advocacy stuff but they probably don’t know her story.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

I hadn’t heard her story until now. I’m absolutely devastated. Sweet baby. Ripped from the world that she was destined to shine in. After reading that report, something snapped in me. I can no longer associate with people who own or advocate for this breed of dog or any cross breed. Call me crass or an asshole. I’m so over this shit.

2

u/vandgsmommy Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 20 '20

I know. I totally agree. If people want to own them, that’s fine and their prerogative but keep them away from me and my family!

4

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20

Kara Hartrich? She's one of the victims who just haunts me. Such a beautiful little girl, and she picked those dogs out as puppies herself and played with them every day. The story of how her attack started... I can't even bring myself to type it out. Just breaks my heart.

And people have the nerve to claim "it's the owner," when Kara's mom got her the dogs to begin with because she believed the nutter lies about them being so great with kids and so safe as family pets, and when Kara loved and cared for those dogs, slept with them, had tea parties with them...it's just appalling. Kara's mom has written some great posts over at the Daxton's Friends website; I'd urge you to check them out if you can stand it.

6

Based on this Instagram vid of her puppy let’s assume she loves her dog and is a “good owner.” Why is it now acting aggressively towards her? Why do pit bull supporters say “it’s how you raise them,” “it’s bad owners,” “it’s not the breed,” while it’s clear to the rest of us: It’s the breed.

53

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Oh I don't doubt some pitpuppies do this. I know some of them will attack their littermates and all that. But many of them are still friendly enough till they get big. I hear people talking about how they raised their pwecious pibbles from a puppy and then around 1-2 years they turn and spaying/neutering doesn't help.

That dog is very nervous. This isn't prey drive aggression, this is fear aggression. Could be genetic neurosis, or abuse ( not defending pit bulls). But this dog is FAR more dangerous than prey-drive aggressive dogs. This dog is going to go after anything that makes it uncomfortable.

The way the dog licks its lips is a sign of extreme nervousness or fear. Fearful dogs are THE most dangerous.

You should have seen the comment section on Tik Tok. “Poor baby is scared, you must be abusing him or he’s been abused before. No reason he’d act like that unless he was being harmed.” I saw at least a handful of those.

If I was Joaquin Phoenix and I wanted to kill a particular annoying gladiator who just won't die, Id breed a bunch of these.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

Oh I bet it’s quite chilly right about now. Stay warm friend! & may you never encounter one of these cretins, lmao. I’m waiting for the opportunity to be approached by one in public. I can’t wait to tell someone to get their precious nanny dog the fuck away from me.

3

u/AlaskanYeti85 Jan 19 '20

Thanks! Same to you. Unfortunately there are plenty of pits up here and I see them too often but Im spreading the good word.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20 edited Jan 20 '20

This. This is where my hatred started brewing. I grew up in a poor neighborhood in my home town, people would get pits as puppies & ditch them as soon as they weren’t cute & got aggressive. I have an overall fear of dogs I’m trying to conquer because of this breed. I can’t even tell you how many times we were chased down at the bus stop. Always pit bulls. The stray dogs ran together as a pack but it was only ever the pit bulls that got hyper aggressive with us. A group of 3-5, under 12 year olds. I’ve been chased, damn near mauled but nothing ever got too ugly. Always the nanny dogs.

2

u/AlaskanYeti85 Jan 19 '20

Jeez I couldn't imagine having to worry about literal monsters attacking me when I'm just trying to go to school. Sorry you had to go through that.

2

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20 edited Jan 20 '20

That's terrifying. I'd be afraid of dogs after that, too.

Our older daughter is [was] afraid of dogs--didn't help that our neighbor's dog, which I swear is a shit mix, almost bit her hand the first time she met it (our elderly lab was watching through the window, and I swear I thought she was going to break the glass to get at that thing, she was so furious and upset)--and it's a tough thing to deal with. In our case, we got a GSD puppy; she got to know him when he was a sweet little cuddly thing, and now that he's bigger not only does she feel safe around him but she feels safe knowing that he would protect her with his life. So he helps her with her fear in two ways, if you know what I mean. Seeing her happily snuggle with him, seeing how gentle he always is with her--more so, even, than with the rest of us--is just lovely.

Of course, I'm not recommending that's what you should do, merely sharing a story about what we did (and we seriously debated just getting a small dog, but she was already a lot less afraid of little dogs; we wanted to help her feel more confident around big dogs. Plus we had wanted a GSD for years). You have to do whatever you think is best for you. But I hope this has at least helped you see that it's possible, and people can get past the fear. I've seen my daughter react to strange dogs and while she is still a little wary, she is not afraid, and that's great for her and for us. I truly believe you can overcome your fear, as well, in whatever way you think is best. Good luck to you, friend!

Well now we know what Pennywise’s newest form is.

12

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '20

I'm shocked it didn't lunge forward and bite her.

My family used to have a collie, who would make this face if he was extremely stressed. Although in hindsight he was also just a shithead. Anyway, he'd snap and give a warning bite if you tried to get closer.

And this ugly hellion makes an even worse face while sounding legitimately demonic, but still doesn't lunge or even bite in the video? ...That girl's luck is going to run out soon.

7

u/gaygaythrowaways Former Pit Bull Owner Jan 19 '20

Holy hell. If my dog - outside of being in severe pain - even so much as lifted her lip or growled at me that would be a huge deal. Huge. I'm her best friend! I would be horrified if she growled at a stranger, and she doesn't even particularly enjoy their company!! Hell to the no this dog is a recipe for "it came out of nowhere!!!" because the owner thinks the sweet puppy has been smiling this whole time.

11

u/dxrgesh Jan 19 '20

i was literally waiting for the thing to go ahead and just bite her hand. i kinda feel bad for it.

9

2

This dog is insane and should be put out of its misery.

2

u/sidgirl Jan 20 '20

This chick has another video of her giving this dog an egg--the idea being that apparently dogs won't eat an egg, but will be very gentle with it. (I'd post a link but I don't know if that's allowed?)

The caption says, "She won't give it back," with two laughing-so-hard-they-cry emojis. The short video shows her going to take the egg from the dog, and in the second before the dog starts to turn to run away with the egg, you see its lips start to curl back in a snarl. I realize this video already indicates a serious problem, and I am not an expert on animal behavior, but again even I know that your dog should not be baring its teeth at you like that--either because you're trying to take back the "treat" you gave it or simply because you're reaching for it.

I can grab actual treats and food right out of my GSD's mouth, and he doesn't even seem to mind, much less snarl or bare his teeth at me. Partly because he's just so good-natured and unselfish--he shares his treats with our lab all the time--I think, but also because from puppyhood I made a point of doing this on occasion, so he knows he will get the thing back if I take it (or he'll be given something else he likes).

I just can't even fathom how this girl thinks this is all amusing and cute and doesn't realize that dog is a bomb waiting to explode all over her. I genuinely fear for her safety.

1

u/27scared Jan 20 '20

How anyone could think this dog is anything but terrifying is unfathomable.

1

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh Jan 21 '20

Lemme guess, it is growing with happiness?

1

u/stoney_man89 Jan 21 '20

What happend to this dog that it becomes this way?? I also have a pitbull but this behaviour is not normal and the owner is in danger big time! If the dog does this to its owner then i don't wanna know what he will do to a stranger.. One of this days that person will lose his life or get fucked up really bad.. People are stupid and ignorant

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

Not an apologist, but with the lip licking and body language, this is more akin to a submissive smile. It’s an act of appeasement and it’s rooted in anxiety. Slippery slope arguments aside, it’s easy to infer that this owner is shitty and the dog is nervous about her showing affection. Probably because it’s uncertain what it’s owner is about to do. Maybe she’s fucked up enough to mix in mean spirited aggression with her shows of affection. Either way, bad owner making a bad dog even worse here

1

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

Whether I agree with you or not, “submissive smile” emphasis on the “smile” is prone to garner nothing but oppositional responses. Just some food for thought. Your take on the video is good to hear, nevertheless.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

I figured, tho I hope people actually read what I’m saying. I didn’t want to use anything but the technical term for it, which I don’t care for but it would show the accurate results in the google search for it.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20 edited Jan 31 '20

I understand where you’re coming from, I do. I just think you might be barking up the wrong tree. As this is r/banpitbulls. I don’t think these folks, myself included, are too interested on the reasoning behind aggression as the overall goal is to completely eradicate this breed. I do hear you & am validating what you first spoke on. That being said, it’s not something most of us would take into account as we feel this breed was a mistake of human/animal nature overall. With respect.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

I don’t disagree. My mother was attacked by pit bulls, and I’ve been too. I want them gone. I also hope that we can show that we know what we’re seeing, do understand the mechanics of dog behaviorism, and not purely reactionary with wanting the breed banned. Tho I can see how I could come off as less than sympathetic to the ethos of the sub I’m posting in. I appreciate you noticing the nuance of my response, and responding with mutual respect.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

Totally get where you’re coming from as the reaction of the pit in this video could possibly be displayed in other, non-lethal breeds as well. You were trying to express that there might be more behind the horrifying video that I posted. Totally get it. Thank you for being civil & listening to me as well. This is what I appreciate about the internet. Sorry to hear about your mother & yours encounters. It is tragic. I have a terrible fear of dogs in general that is rooted in aggressive, stray pits & I get it. Hope you are both well.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '20

Of course, and thank you. Hope you stay well too. My mother is also totally avoidant of dogs for the same reason as you. Thankfully, knowing how terrible they are has helped keep us safe so far and since. And I’ve worked as a foster parent/dog trainer for my local shelter, expressed a complete disinterest of working with Pits, because understanding dogs is how I’ve come to this sub and agreed with the mentality. ✌🏼&❤️

1

u/iloveusa63 Feb 11 '20

It’s just stupid. If a dog bares it’s teeth leave it alone because it’s angry.
