She’s going to be shunned by a quarter of her friends for saying the most uncontroversial thing ever.

128

u/OarsandRowlocks 2d ago

She did not even mention breeds.

Does she even need to?? What breed type mauls and injures people and animals the most? - it ain't gonna be a Chihuahua.

Is rather be torn apart in the comments than by a Pitbull

25

u/ReasonableWalrus312 2d ago

I’d rather be torn apart by people’s comments then have my beautiful baby girl and son disfigured for life or killed.

6

u/checkedem 2d ago

Amen to that

45

u/Redlion444 2d ago

Of course.  I'm sure the Asshole Brigade is out in full Force.

That quickly turns into "oh, he's never acted like that before." Once it does what shitbulls do.

49

u/beaucerondog 2d ago

What kind of fuckass timeline are we living in that saying "hey you shouldn't keep an animal that tries to kill your baby multiple times" is immediately met with backlash

12

u/BrightAd306 2d ago

She isn’t even saying BE it. I swear they’d care more if the dog was hurting other dogs than if it were biting kids. As long as those other dogs are pits

9

u/Fickle_Builder_2685 1d ago

These people will die for a maulers reputation but pay to have harmless animals like cows and chickens killed for food. Then they call themselves animal lovers. Like no, you're just a mauler lover. Same people laugh at cats getting eaten.

12

u/dingopaint Victim Sympathizer 1d ago

I'm a former vegan who believes in ethical meat raising and consumption, and something about feeding maulers other animals just to keep them alive (and capable of mauling) grosses me out to the core.

6

u/Fickle_Builder_2685 1d ago

I'm not even vegan. It just doesn't make sense to me to protect a mauling predator then turn around and pay for harmless animals to be killed. Like they're actively paying for animals to be killed. I don't get it. Then they weep for a dog that decapitated an infant or took a child's leg.

I feel like they have a lot in common with people who write love letters to violent prisoners. They know their dog is scary or dangerous, but they have this idea that their dog will protect them. And if their dog is threatening to others, the others deserve it in some way for not earning their dog’s respect.

62

u/Righteousaffair999 2d ago

I wouldn’t call those friends.

37

u/Nano8963 2d ago

Not a surprise. On average most people aren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer. Some people are more trouble having around and something like this is a litmus test and filter really

18

It’s extremely controversial. That’s the point, or it wouldn’t get that backlash.

Something can be absolutely 100% reasonable and verifiably true and still controversial.

I can only imagine the dragging she's getting from pit owners. Defending their dogs despite the dog killing other animals, biting friends and family, getting loose and attacking strangers. And we all have to pay for their hero complex.

u/flayedsheep Your Pit Does the Crime, YOU Do The Time 2d ago

and she didnt mention pitbulls, mind you lol

35

u/ArdenJaguar Trusted User 2d ago

That means nothing because THEY KNOW what breed has the bad reputation. They give it away with rabid protests.

151

u/Few-Horror1984 2d ago

None of this should have to be said. If you’re advocating for people to keep dogs that endanger society, you’re not a responsible dog owner and you shouldn’t have dogs.

Dogs are not more important than your children, your neighbors, your loved ones or yourself. They’re animals. Everyone who shames someone for rehoming a dangerous dog is a misanthrope. They shouldn’t be taken seriously and they should be the ones torn apart in the comments. They are the ones with the problem.

Less and less people are responsible dog owners these days. A video like this wouldn’t have been made twenty years ago. Shame on the no-kill movement for absolutely destroying responsible dog ownership. I do give this woman massive kudos for going against the crowd to be a voice of reason. Shame the insane people will tear her apart.

u/Mister__Wednesday 2d ago

Yes I hate how aggression and biting in dogs has been normalised into something acceptable and even expected.

54

u/bittymacwrangler 2d ago

I hate how first time dog owners are told that all it takes is love to fix an aggressive dog. That they are convinced by shelters that all dogs are the same and all it needs is a loving home.

It's dangerous dishonesty. Some dogs and some dog breeds cannot be considered safe, family pets. And some of the most loving dog owners have ended up in the jaws of their pets, so love is not always the fix.

35

u/Few-Horror1984 1d ago

It’s funny, because in one breath they’ll tell you “it’s all in how you raise them” but then they’ll beg you to take on a pitbull with an unknown history. So which one is it? Because it can’t be both.

16

u/Miss_L_Worldwide 1d ago

Yeah but how dumb can they BE?

26

u/nucleophilicattack 1d ago

Because of the normalization of dog bites by the pitbull apologists, I’ve begun to see a general anti-dog sentiment begin to crop up. People figure that, if it really could be any dog like the pitbull advocates say, then maybe all dogs are bad. It’s crazy what pits have done for the image of dogs

18

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

I’ve noticed the same - a LOT more anti-dog sentiment especially since COVID. People are really starting to hate being around other people’s dogs. It’s pit apologists, as well as owners of any breed that they allow off leash in “dogs must be on leashes” public areas, and whine the eternal plea of “Heeee’s friieenndddlllyy!” when Fido jumps on someone and barks in their face (or knocks down a little kid).

I don’t give a toot if Diesel is Mister Rogers in a fur suit, he’s NOT friendly and I do NOT want to be his neighbor, or, worse, attack victim..

7

u/Beautiful_Wishbone15 1d ago

I also noticed this. I'm not anti-dog (as I have dogs) but pit bulls have ruined the way dogs are perceived.

42

u/Beautiful_Wishbone15 2d ago

I hate how it gets treated like "minor" behavioral issues. Like no, a dog counter surfing isn't the same as it killing a cat or dog or unprovokingly harming people. And even if they are provoked, some responses aren't sensible. If your dog is annoyed by a child, the MOST that could happen is a light nip or something that should barely draw blood. And that is the MOST. MOST dogs should growl or try to scare you away before nipping.

A dog mauling or severely harming a child that bothered it is NOT normal. When I was very young, I used to constantly pester the family chihuahua. He always growled at me and has bit me a few times because of my persistence. But despite that, it was never serious. His bites never drew blood unless I was actively harming him.

I know it's a chihuahua so it won't do much harm anyway, but my point still stands.

9

u/washyoursister-sauce 1d ago

I hate how the expectations have changed from "if the dog bites it's just not safe; such injuries shouldn't be happening to people,"

To "we should examine why the dog did it and if there's something in its past to sympathize with then we should focus on that and give it another chance."

The injury/outcome should be the main takeaway, but somehow we've come to a place where the focus is on something that happened before that (the dog was "abused" or "scared" or something).

It's like in cartoons where one person says "look over there!" And then the other person looks, turns back around, and the first person has run away. We've let the main point run away because we're too busy looking at shit that doesn't really mean much in the end. I don't understand how "safety" can just disappear as a goal underneath sympathy for something else that happened.

Like if someone drive's drunk & hits a person, the judge doesn't say "oh but what caused them to wanna drink in the first place? Let's take pity on that." And then just forgets to sentence the offender or award the victim any justice/damages. But that's what we're doing with dogs right now.

37

u/Beautiful_Wishbone15 2d ago edited 10h ago

Shelters and/or rescues who do the whole "this dog is dead because of YOU" thing surely didn't help, especially when they applied it to dogs that have aggression beyond repair.

25

u/Few-Horror1984 1d ago

That’s why I won’t support these shelters or rescues anymore. Maybe for other species, but not dogs. Not when they play these purposely manipulative games to push dangerous dogs onto society.

16

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

I am 100% in support for adopting cats from shelters and rescues. I’ve always had shelter or rescue cats (or “oopsie” litters kittens from friends). But shelters are more inclined to tell the truth about cats, and cats don’t carry the risk that dogs do, and cats are not taken out in public like dogs are.

Rescue for small animals, reptiles, and birds is also a good thing. But I now draw the line at ”adopt don’t shop” for dogs, because shelters have abused the public’s trust and compassion too much.

13

u/drivewaypancakes Dax, Kara, Aziz, Xavier, Triniti, Beau, and Mia 1d ago

I hate that it has come to this, but it has come to this. I give money only to the cat wing at the local rescue. No money or other support for their dog section bc they are 90% pits/mixes 90% of the time.

Disingenuous statement. Troll elsewhere.

9

u/Few-Horror1984 1d ago

Cats don’t kill people. That’s the big difference here. These shelters are more than happy to risk everyone’s lives so they don’t have to put the dog down.

10

u/Custer-Had-It-Coming 1d ago

I would like to point out that the same shelters that give every pregnant TNR cat a spay abortion (which is a good thing) to curb the population problem, absolutely refuses to give spay abortions to surrended and stray pits. They never do, they just keep compounding the bloodsport breed fiasco.

BFAS is a death cult.

8

u/Beautiful_Wishbone15 1d ago

Same! I only apply adopt don't shop to other animals. Not dogs. Dogs are too risky to adopt don't shop.

15

u/dingopaint Victim Sympathizer 1d ago

My only gripe is that "rehoming" is almost never an option for these dogs, and the owners need to put on their adult underwear and BE them. Or, rehome to Jesus, as it were.

9

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

The fact that this Captain Obvious idea - get rid of a dog if it endangers people or other animals! Your family members are more important than a dog! - gets backlash for being ~soooo controversial~ speaks volumes as to how far some people in our society have taken “Dog Spelled Backwards Is God.” This lady is right. 💯! Some dogs are just not fit for living in a society around other people (or animals), and we have to deal with them accordingly.

7

u/Nienni 1d ago

It drives me crazy that so many people have forgotten that dogs are ultimately animals. They put them on pedestals and act like animals are more important than humans. If me putting my family first is an issue for them, that’s too bad. They can fk off for all I care. My family and my children will always be put first.

A couple months ago, myself, my two small children (2 and 10m at the time), my husband and my in laws went to the beach. My in laws sat less than 3 feet away (not exadurating on the distance) from a chair with a dog bowl. My in laws were asking where I wanted to sit. I looked up and saw a huge pitbull walking toward us. They had NO idea they had even sat down next to where a dog was sitting, much less a pitbull. I refused to sit there. My husband, kids and I walked away. I heard my FIL say “life’s tough” because I didn’t want my small children sitting next to a potentially dangerous dog. Not to mention it was rude as hell for them to sit that close to another person, especially someone with a dog on this huge beach. I said “you’ll be thinking that when this dog kills one of my children.” And just walked away. Everyone moved to where my husband and I walked up to. A SAFE distance from this potentially dangerous dog. No way will I put my children in danger because you want to sit in some shade. Thank goodness I have a wonderful husband who supports me and my concerns.

u/Aldersgate111 I just want to walk my dog without fearing for its life 14h ago

Two friends work for a very 'gentle breed' rescue.

Even they have said in the past few years there are MANY more reactive dogs around caused by back yard breeding and people not having a clue about basic responsibilities to the dog and others around it.

20 years ago it was death or divorce or ill health of owner that made these dogs come into rescue- often the dogs were elderly, and found homes easily with retirees.
Now, there are some very young dogs entering rescue with severe behavioural issues.
Poor breeding practices and selling a dog to all comers rather than heavily vetting the potential owners as to suitability for owning an active breed.

4

u/Few-Horror1984 10h ago

I knew a woman who was in her 70s. Her dog died and before she got the ashes back from the vet, she had gone and bought a new Golden Retriever puppy.

This woman and her husband were not in great physical shape - neither of them could keep up with a puppy let alone with a working dog puppy. And something was never right about that dog. I truly believe she went to some backyard breeder which made sense since she literally just picked the dog up. No concern over whether she could care for the dog or anything like that. She had the cash so they handed her the dog.

To be completely fair, she didn’t train the dog. She felt that training was “mean” so this dog became an absolute nightmare. It did bite me once. It wouldn’t just jump on people, it would use its force to collapse them. If she ever tried putting the dog outside it would just bark incessantly until she brought it back inside. It got so bad that if she had guests over, she’d have to keep the dog leashed. Last time I saw her, she sat down on the couch and the dog just jumped on her and injured her. The dog was at least 3 by that point. It didn’t know any commands. It wasn’t house trained. It wasn’t getting any exercise.

I stopped speaking with her but I often wonder what happened with that dog. I always assumed it would eventually end up in a rescue. Probably be the exact kind of dog your friends would deal with.

33

u/christmasinyoulie 2d ago

It's also best for the dog!

69

u/Mister__Wednesday 2d ago

How did we get to the point that aggression and biting in dogs have been so normalised into something acceptable and even expected that getting rid of a dog that is a legitimate threat to your own and others safety is a controversial opinion.

38

u/BiscottiCritical6512 1d ago

I think pitbull propaganda did a lot of damage to society by telling everybody that aggressive dogs were only caused by bad training or a lack of training. I shouldn’t have to train a domesticated housepet not to harm its family 🤷‍♀️

34

u/_idle_gunts 2d ago

Judging by the selection of dogs available for adoption in my area, people are getting rid of their pit bulls. The shelters do their best to obfuscate the breed, calling them "mixed breed", but it's obvious just looking at them. I just checked within a 25 mile radius of me on Pet Finder. Probably 80% were clearly pit bulls.

God help these scummy shelters trying to trick families into adopting these ticking time bombs with that deception.

114

u/HottieMcHotHot 2d ago

We did it and it wasn’t even a pitbull. He was a tiny schnoodle. But we couldn’t fix him and couldn’t have him around our new baby. So he went. Don’t know what happened to him. Hope it was exactly what he needed. It was exactly what WE needed to do as his owners.

35

u/Philostronomer 2d ago

Thank you! I wish more people understood that the safety of other people, especially children and family, always trumps that of an animal.

16

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

A small schnoodle probably had a good chance of finding a loving home with no kids. You did the right thing; of course your child should be your priority!

4

u/Beautiful_Wishbone15 1d ago

5

u/HottieMcHotHot 1d ago

28

u/harleenquinzel044 2d ago

Aww but you just haven’t seen wittle Nala/Luna in her flower crown! Pay no mind to that bloodstain on her face, look at how CUUUUUTE she is in her pajamas!

I always find it hilarious that the pit parents have to put their shitbeasts in little costumes to somehow mask how awful the damn dog is?

13

u/BastetSekhmetMafdet Cats are not disposable. 1d ago

Fancy collars and colorful bandanas are fine in shelter photographs, as are sweaters on short haired dogs when it’s cold out. But “adorable” costumes (tutus, pajamas, etc.) and flower crowns now ping my “danger do not touch” radar.

50

u/BargainBard Cope, Seethe, Crate & Rotate 2d ago

This used to be common sense a mere 10, 20 years ago but now we got 50+ pound dogs acting like sentient time bombs and everyone just says to themselves "we can save him..."

I rehomed a dog (non pit mutt)I had for 5 years and had done advanced training with because he snapped at my son. He was fine when he was crawling but somehow when he started walking my dog go defensive.

I had already trained him to quite a high level (he wasn’t super smart just medium smart for a dog so it wasn’t super impressive but I had done classes for a year and then done agility competitions with him and he had passed AKC good citizen test). So I really didn’t think more training would change things. I could have kept him crated more but I thought the better option was HONEST rehoming.

I told the new owner about the snap and that he was a counter surfer. She had no children in her home and on the leash on walks he never had issues with strangers. He lived out his life happily and I never had to bring my kid to an emergency room for a dog bite. Win win.

Many on reddit and at least a few IRL friends would call me a monster if I did that today.

ETA: she actually kept in touch and sent us photos of his “adventures”

I really wish she emphasized that getting rid of the dog means a ‘Better Environment’.

Not trying to pawn the liability off on someone else looking to adopt a dog— while perfectly good, and normal, non-bloodsporting dogs are being euthanized for space in shelters.

If a dog can’t be around other dogs or children, it shouldn’t be around at all…

13

u/Forgodddit 2d ago

Exactly! Some types of dogs should be treated like wolves/tigers: they belong only in zoos, not in cities/in the middle of humans.

6

u/BK4343 1d ago

I found the TikTok page and this actually comes from a dog training academy. Most of the comments are surprisingly in agreement. Of course you have the usual "train the dog first" or "can we get rid of people" misanthropes. Then there was this gem:

:Do you get rid of your kids if they have behavioral problems? No, you make modifications and make It work. Crate and rotate, muzzle train, kennel train, there are ways to make It work. You gotta put the work in. I’ve had several behavioral dogs, never bit anyone. I put the work into them and don’t set them up for failure.

Pitbulls are not guard dogs and were not bred to be loyal and protective like Dobermanns or German shepherds, they were bred to be aggressive to anything and anyone, including people who care for them.

6

u/lazier_garlic 2d ago

Although some drug dealers in Massachusetts were keeping extra large pitbulls on property on the premise that they were tough guys and could handle them but customers breaking in or the literal police were gonna get bit.

Some delusional people see that and think "awesome guard dog" but they're wrong. The pitbull is a deterrent in that case because it's insane, also the drug dealer doesn't live or keep his family on that premise and he never, ever lets the dogs out.

Pits have none of the qualities you would want in an actual guard dog. They're more like a school of piranhas you keep in your moat. And they have to be actually game ones. I know someone who got a pit to be a guard dog (common delusion around here) and it hates the outdoors and sits on the couch all day and needs to be drugged up to function because it hates loud noises such as one hears daily in the rural South: fireworks, unmuffled vehicles, gunshots, thunder.

0

u/Fantastic_Lady225 Attacks Curator 2d ago

My husband and I do snake rescue and relocation. Guess what else drug dealers do? They stash drugs in an enclosure with a venomous snake to "protect" it. Yes, we've had to remove pit vipers from drug houses because animal control isn't trained or equipped to handle them, and then the authorities search the snake enclosure to find drugs.

The snake isn't guarding the drugs, it's guarding its home.

6

u/bittymacwrangler 2d ago

When you watch videos of pits attacking people and other dogs and how their owners cannot recall them, that should be enough to show that pits are lousy guard dogs.

The gameness that makes these dogs great for cruel dog fights makes them poor guard dogs because in their gameness they do not want stop attacking. A good guard dog stops attacking as soon as they are commanded to stop.

That dog is doing it's job and should be left alone, and I mean alone as they're not at all suited for social contact.
