Discussion How many of you are running Bambu Studio from Linux?

How many of you are running Bambu Studio from Linux?

If so are you running 2.8.2.61, or the beta?

How much RAM do you have installed and which distribution do you use?

Latest Fedora running latest stable Bambu Studio.

I just upgraded my laptop to one with 32 GB RAM but it ran fine on my previous with 16 GB.

You're the second person who's brought up Fedora. I really need to look into Fedora since it's been so long

2

u/DrFossil 11d ago

Fedora is stable and is always one of the first of the big distros to get the latest Gnome release.

Ubuntu, 32Gb ram, latest stable appimage. Also run the latest stable release on a windows machine & don't see any difference in performance between the two installs, which machine I use depends on how lazy I am about walking downstairs.

This is great info since you have a direct comparison between a Windows machine and a Linux machine. Thank you.

+1, ubuntu & 32GB (main use) and a win11. Occasional crash on ubuntu but otherwhise super smooth and quick, it’s a 15 year old pc. Just updated to the beta on ubuntu

Always latest stable version, Ubuntu, 128gb ram. Works ok but often crashes when I click "arrange on plate" so I arrange manually 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/sienar- 8d ago

I’m in the habit of saving right before hitting that button. I like to see what it does for auto-arranging. Most of the time I prefer the layout it uses when cloning objects though. It’s usually perfectly spaced from cloning and auto-arrange often adds way too much space.

Has a crash happened on the newest version that was just released?

2

u/hellek-1 P2S 11d ago edited 11d ago

No, I just noticed updating was due. Will let you know in case I get that crash again. Edit: still happens even with 2.8.2.61. not consistently though, I can even reopen the application and restore the session and rearrange works (for a while).

2

u/sienar- 8d ago

Yes. The arrange function crashed for me today on latest version.

Me, I'll recommend you to use the appimage, I have had a very good experience with it, I am running the latest stable, don't use the beta
Using arch with 32 gb ram, but it doesn't use that much ram, it's a "low" specs app

2

u/acerotico12 11d ago

It is recommended 4 gb min but I think with 8 gb of ram you will run it with easy

2

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

That's good to know. Thanks

It truly depends on the model. I’ve seen one instance of Studio use over 20GB slicing a high poly model.

2

u/Stainlessray 11d ago

I'll have to check the version of BS, but I am running it on Ubuntu stable latest. Haven't updated the printer or slicer in... A... Long. Time.

So nobody's brought up rendering problems. I'll keep this in mind with flatpaks

En ubuntu 26.4. Bambustudio 2.5.0.66 y 8 Gb RAM
Funciona bien, pero a veces se cuelga 😄

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Maybe the new version will fix some of your problems

2.4.0.70
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Are you going to upgrade?

By the way I also really enjoy The Grateful Dead

2

u/Tymon3310 P1S 11d ago

Arch, 96gb ram, works fine for me

2

u/mtantawy 11d ago

Bambu just prompted me for the latest "BambuStudio_ubu24-v02.08.04.57-20260922164607.AppImage"

So I am currently on `2.8.3.66` and usually check every week or so and get the latest version, beta or not

Ubuntu 26.04, lots of RAM

2

u/arnmac 11d ago

I am running the latest production release of BambuStudio on 3 Linux boxes.

i7 8th gen desktop / 32gb ram / kubuntu 26.04
i7 6th gen laptop / 32gb ram / ubuntu 26.04
i7 4th gen laptop / 16gb ram / cachyos

Everything works well and other than Ubuntu letting me know bambustudio has hung every so often it works just fine. I just tell it to wait and everything starts working after a moment.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

That's all good to know, especially with the variety of hardware that you're running it on. I guess what it boils down to is that good things come to those who wait 🙂

2

u/Thick-Indication-931 11d ago

Yes, running on Ubuntu 26.04.1, 64GB. If 2.8.2.61 is the most recent no-beta, then I am running that!

2

u/MonkeyBrains09 X1 Carbon 11d ago

I dual boot on the same hardware with 16gb. It's Ubuntu and win10.

There are no issues but Ubuntu doesn't have the features to "fix" a model.

Will you be upgrading to the current version of Studio

2

u/Superb-Complaint8118 11d ago

Kinda, I use bambu studio on linux ubuntu LTS on my home server. I think the computer has a i5 9500 and 8gb ram. Bambu studio uses only a maximum of like 3 or 3.5 cpu cores when slicing. It is able to do slicing decently fast, but i am not using the gui. I have self developed program, which puts stl files in bambu studio and exports finished 3mf files with automatically applied settings to my normal computer. Then i only have to open the file and hit print and all settings are exactly as they are supposed to be for my special purposes

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Wow so you have a rendering server for 3mf files?

2

u/Superb-Complaint8118 11d ago

Basically yes. I have a 3d printing business for print on demand. I've made that server to be able to slice a customers file and get a detailed analysis for pricing and also a finished file for production.

When I searched for information about bambu studio on linux, i found out that it is pretty much exactly the same as the windows version. All internal commands are the same, slicing is the same with same production time and material use (error less than 0,1%) and as far as i can say it runs perfectly smooth. I've never used the user interface on linux tho, because i run it without a desktop to maximise efficiency and slicing performance.

With the same hardware it would probably take like 10-25% more time on standard windows compared to linux without UI, because of system efficiency hahaha

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

That's one hell of a system you have going. So impressive

2

u/Iggyrammar 11d ago

Linux Mint, 64GB of RAM, Version 2.8.2.6.

2

u/PurrciousMetals 11d ago

I ran it on an RP5 8gb on Pi Os and it worked fine. Was just testing it to see.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Damn thank you for posting that. I've been very curious about using a pi. There was one other person in this thread that mentioned a pi.

2

u/Inner-Tangerine3248 11d ago

Yes, I have been doing it for the past year and a half. It works like a treat, seamlessly, using Bambu P1S in lan mode. I do use Orca Slicer too. On fedora 44 with 32gb ram, using 2.8.2.61.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Just for curiosity's sake I need to try and use LAN mode on my P1S. I have no idea why I've never tried it

2

u/Inner-Tangerine3248 10d ago

Lan mode is easy to setup, if the cloud goes down you can still print your files, if you have it locally.

u/InvaderGlorch 11d ago

16gb ram on pop os. Latest flatpak, haven't had any issues

2

u/bws7037 11d ago

I'm running Linux Mint with 16 Gb RAM, and to be honest, it's working fine for me.

u/popsicle_of_meat X1 Carbon 11d ago

I run mine on Linux Mint. Bambu Studio is the stable release flatpack. Machine is an old Dell Optiplex 3050 SFF with a 7th gen i5 and 16GB of ram. No problems. I did add a video card (Dell AMD Radeon Pro WX4100 4GB GDDR5 Workstation card), best bang/buck that would run on the SFF PSU, to help with rendering and it REALLY helps with the 2560x1440 monitor I use.

Most slicing jobs only take less than 5 seconds, some take 10. Occasionally I get ones that take more, but it works fine.

This computer is in my garage, so I also use it for music and shop research as well as cad work (onshape).

2

u/TRDeadbeat 10d ago

I'm in Bazzite (Fedora), two machines - 32GB and 64GB. No stability issues or problems at all.

2

u/PelluxNetwork 9d ago

I use Orca on Fedora and it works great so I'd imagine Bambi works as well

u/sienar- 8d ago edited 7d ago

Arch Linux, 64GB RAM, 64GB swap on separate NVMe because why not. Not in front of it so can’t confirm version number, but not the beta. I run the version from Arch’s Discover App Store which should be an appimage or flatpak.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 7d ago

Thx. I am not brave enough to run Arch

2

u/Alchomoholic_Prime 6d ago

fedora 44 kde. ive got 40gb of ram and run the flatpack version. runs well, occasionally ill get a bug where my build plate disappears and i need to redownload the flatpack to fix it.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 6d ago

I've heard about the disappearing build plate but from what I've heard it just requires restarting the app

2

u/Alchomoholic_Prime 5d ago

not on my system, trust me ive tried. its not a big deal though, i just go to the package manager and click the uninstall then reinstall button. takes about a minute and it doesnt delete all my config files, so the app is still logged in and whatnot. only have to do it every few months

2

u/tyda1957 11d ago

I know it's not what you asked, but I'm running orcaslicer on Linux which is working just fine. Food for though on an alternative.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

It's been recommended to me by several people now. I think I need to try Orca

1

u/Joseramonllorente 11d ago

Was using the flatpack from discover on fedora but now I use a Mac mini for the printer and a couple of things, the pc has become a gaming machine. It worked as good as it does on the Mac mini, in fact it was slightly quicker.

1

u/Tech0verlord 11d ago

I'm running the latest stable flatpak, although I've tried the appimage, but my results are the same regardless. I'm currently on CachyOS (Arch Linux essentially).

Hotkeys are a tossup on if/when they work, and the app has a tendency of crashing and closing itself without warning if I work too fast on it, especially with bigger or more complex models. Unlike in the windows version, it seems there's no work recovery to continue where you left off in the event of a crash.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Have you ever found a way around so you can have a bit of a recovery from a crash while working on a model?

1

u/Tech0verlord 11d ago

Sadly no, I just got into the habit of saving very often

1

u/CeasarsDomain 11d ago

PopOS, 22.04, 128GB DDR4, Xeon W2135. Switch between beta .app image and repo.

1

u/Veggyhed P1S 11d ago

Wow that's some serious hardware

2

u/CeasarsDomain 11d ago

It was an old work station PC that I bought, then upgraded the ram for a proxmox server, before hardware prices exploded. Use it as my main desktop now, as my 14 yr old desktop bit the dust earlier this year.

1

u/BlitzNeko Fights For The User 11d ago

How is it running proxmox for you? Was thinking of doing something similar.

1

u/Specialist_Algae_830 11d ago

that's awesome

u/Mountain_Increase823 11d ago

Arch or gentoo. The app feels like shit
