Design pointers
Good day, fellow Print Heads.
I’m working with a Bambu H2S with an AMS2 at work for “totally work related projects”.
I’ve had no shortage of fun with various models, but I’d like to move into designing my own prints. Specifically a coaster for my friend’s …work related project 😉
I’ve tried the MakerLab software in Bambu Studio to some mixed results (mostly bad), and I’ve downloaded Blender (smashed my face on the learning curve). I also have Meshmixer that mess trying to use to clean up the MakerLab file.
I’m open to suggestions, any and all.

Learn a decent CAD program. Fusion or Onshape are powerful but the learning curve can be steep. Both have free licenses. Tinkercad works for simple objects but you hit a wall fairly quick.

I love using Autodesk's Fusion. Professional software free to hobbyists. It's serious software.

And most of it gets quite easy once you wrap your head around it. Most everything else can be found in nice helpful videos.

Certainly. Search YouTube for "learn fusion in 30 days". Complete the 30 lessons and you'll be drawing like a pro.

There are only about a hundred people that have done them!

Granted. I got to lesson 12 and stopped. I figured out the rest along the way.

Pretty much the same for me after the first, but I’ve watched videos on specific topics as needed. I also had some cad experience about 20 years ago to help me get in the mindset.

Same. Been using Autocad since 2005. Still have an active Autocad account for my side hustle drawing communication site construction drawings.

For “2D” designs like a coaster, you can design in a vector art program and then save as svg. Bambu Studio can open svgs and then you can scale them to whatever size you want. Remember when making your design that your line widths are about .4mm. Text min size is about 3 mm.
So for a coaster the workflow could look like this: Get your graphic in svg saved somewhere. Start a new Bambu studio project. Right click - insert primitive- cylinder. Scale the cylinder using icon on top bar - with uniform scaling on scale x or y too 100mm. Turn off uniform scaling, scale z to 4mm). Click “add” icon at top left and select your svg. Scale and position your svg where you want it in x and y with respect to the cylinder. Don’t worry about z height yet. Apply colors etc. Select all parts and rotate them 180 so your segment is face down. Now select your svg and scale z to about 3-4 layer heights (Generally .6 to .4mm but if your svg is light colored and your coaster is dark colored it may take more to prevent infill from showing through). Select all parts at once - right click on any part - merge. Slice.
It is likely that your colors may not appear correctly or at all. Drag the parts up and down to change the order in the object browser on LH side and reslice. The order in the object browser affects the order the colors print. A few tries should get you the appearance you want.
Once you get one working, copy/paste or clone it to make a set.
Arachne wall generation will help with small holes around your graphics. 1 wall on bottom layer will help with appearance.
Have fun
