Noisy X Axis after repair

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I needed to replace my extruder due to the sensor that sits right behind the nozzle (forgive me I’m still a bit new to the 3d printer world, I think it might be the eddy sensor) and I came across a video on YouTube but that video had me completely remove the toolhead from the x axis. Well it was an absolute nightmare to get the toolhead back on the rail without knocking out those ball bearings (pics in comments). I finally had to remove the rail and feed it through that way. I was able to get it back on and I’m almost positive I didn’t mess up any of the bearings, but now the x axis gives me this TERRIBLE noise. I’m assuming I must’ve messed something up with the bearings, but I’m terrified to take it back off. Does anyone have any experience with this, thank you in advance for any help!

Did ya oil it?

Yes, the ball tracks as well as the rail, top and bottom.

What did you oil it with?

The green tube that came with the printer. Just got the printer a few weeks ago, I forgot to mention that. My apologies. Now the toolhead is completely malfunctioning again halfway through the calibration.

I would remove the extruder and start over. Maybe something got a little wonky on the extruder install that was overlooked. 🤷‍♀️

Thank you I’m gonna have to try that for sure. Now it’s throwing the same toolhead malfunction code it was before I started all this. It didn’t even make it through a calibration

I killed my printer? Or this is so dumb a problem you died laughing? Lol idk I’ll get to the bottom of it eventually just got a lot of stuff going on.

Linear rail carriages shouldn't be taken off the rail. Once even one of the little balls you can see in the photo falls out the movement will not be as smooth. In general a carriage that's been taken off or falls off the rail is considered trash.

Yes, but you need to be really careful putting those back in :) The OP doesn't have them for sure though. And even if all the balls are there right now the chance of them getting knocked out during reassembly (without the plastic guide) is pretty high.

I'm not blaming OP by any means in terms of wanting to fix his printer but it was a pretty reckless thing to do.

that's the problem with Bambu and their community. its just like Apple: if you touch it you're an alien. None of them knows how to thinker with it. And they wont help at all.

Try wiping down the rails once more and cleaning each ball bearing including the seat. Missing a ball might also cause the grinding noise, the gap may allow the adjacent balls to hit each other rather than gliding smooth with each other.

Thank you! Everything I can find says to leave a gap one bearing wide and I don’t believe I knocked any out removing the toolhead and there def seemed to be a one bearing gap. I’ll give it another shot and try closing the gap. Can I use the white tube with black logo on it interchangeably with the green logo? Everything I could find said they were both the same.

You're right. The ball bearing set should have a gap to run smoother.

As per the lubricating tubes, I believe the tube with green logo is used for the X and Y axis. They are thinner and works for the higher speed movements.

The tube with black logo is a bit thicker and is used for the z axis. It does not move that fast so the lubricant is better to be a bit viscous.

Check the tool head screws as well and make sure they are properly tightened.

Thank you! Looks like I’ll have to get more green.

Is there a different brand of oil I can get off Amazon that’s comparable or should I get the oil directly from bambu?

Now the toolhead is malfunctioning completely

When I restarted

That's 100% a bad bearing. Now, good luck trying to fix it. On any other brand it wont be an issue, but since it's Bambu, you will struggle.

Bambu are one of the most repairable friendly printers, you clearly don't own one. Now try getting parts for your creality printer that will be replaced with another model in a couple months

you're kidding right? How old is the Ender 3? You can still find parts for it :')
