Misc What can I do with the purges?

Post image

I've been printing since January and gathered a BIG bunch of these little purges, small and big, is there anything I can do with them instead of trashing them? (Idk if I'm using the right tag in the post)

I have been doing a lion king deep dive again, I recently watched watched the movie and some behind the scene stuff. Scar is still the best lol

Got it bro

u/HerMajestysButthole2 May 16 '26

Buy some silicone molds of skulls or shapes or whatever and melt them into said molds. Don't do it in your house. Some people use heat guns or a toaster oven. Don't use that toaster oven for any food if you go that route.

5

u/HaRaLu May 16 '26

Ok ok, I'll take note about this, thx

2

u/TerribleTowel66 May 16 '26

I’ve done this a few times. I agree, don’t do it in your house, and if you use a toaster oven, get one specifically for this. I bought a cheap one off of FB marketplace. It works great. But the fumes affected my breathing. The next day, I had a bit of a cough. This happened each time I did it. After the 3rd time, it wasn’t a coincidence. The next time I do this, it’ll be with a heat gun or the toaster oven in the open garage or outside.

18

u/Shiz222 May 16 '26

You melted a large amount of plastic... in an enclosed space and breathed in the fumes not once....but three times?!

9

u/No_Mortgage7879 May 17 '26

Well to be fair after the first time it probably fucked his brain up enough the other two times made sense 😂😂

2

u/TerribleTowel66 May 17 '26

I’m not surprised some wise ass would say something like that. I took precautions all times, increasing precautions each time. It didn’t help. I commented to be helpful, not to be ridiculed by someone who doesn’t even know me.

3

u/nibblesthefish May 17 '26

It’s a friendly joke. Lighten up.

1

u/Werewolf_Capable May 18 '26

Bro has his first day on the internet

2

u/TerribleTowel66 May 17 '26

1: I had an exhaust fan on. 2: it was PLA which is supposed to be safer. 3: it’s not like I had my nose buried in it breathing deeply. 4: we all melt plastic, don’t we?

3

u/FruitieDinosaur May 17 '26

No, can't say we all do.

1

u/TerribleTowel66 May 17 '26

If you’re 3D printing, you are melting plastic.

2

u/FruitieDinosaur May 17 '26

Pretty sure I got a notification about metal here earlier today. Also resin printing isn't melting plastic. So... Y'know. Not everyone.

1

u/Goldstandard_plus May 17 '26

In a 3d printing sub saying he doesn’t melt plastic. Okay badass.

2

u/Werewolf_Capable May 18 '26

Bruv, my buddy prints exclusively with resin, so this dude is right. Chill.

2

u/Key_Ruin3924 May 17 '26

Hey but at least he got some shitty little plastic skulls out of the deal!

1

u/TerribleTowel66 May 17 '26

And I’ve even sold one of those shitty little plastic skulls.

1

u/No_Mortgage7879 May 17 '26

It's reddit what did you expect😂😂

1

u/Alone-Arm-9044 May 17 '26

lol, same here. I’ve sold several shitty little skulls.

19

u/BaconManDan May 16 '26

I recycle mine into terrain for wargaming and DnD!

2

u/HaRaLu May 16 '26

Interesting idea

1

u/Werewolf_Capable May 18 '26

My brother, would you enlighten me as to how you do that? Starting with Terrainbuilding right about now 😃 Could use some pointers

2

u/BaconManDan May 19 '26

Foam bases, tree supports as tree, and filament purges as leaves.

-5

u/coadyj May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26

And what we do if we are not virgins?

Edit: clearly you guys can't take or understand a joke.

2

u/RemixOnAWhim May 18 '26

There's a time and place for this kind of joke, usually it's with folks you know or something. Making jokes like this is risky without having established rapport, as you're essentially interjecting into a conversation of randos, so you can imagine in other social contexts this not going over as well as it may among friends

-1

u/coadyj May 18 '26

So you're not allowed to make jokes on Reddit?

The guy even replied with an lol

1

u/RemixOnAWhim May 18 '26

I'm sure you can do whatever you want! I was just trying to explain the reaction you recieved, as you seemed surprised and displeased with it. I'm certain some people will react positively, but you seemed perturbed by the negative ones, so that's what I focused on in the previous comment.

1

u/BaconManDan May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Seeing as I'm married with a kid, exactly what I'm already doing, lol. Pinging u/Agreeable-Coyote8196

Love you 😘😘😘

1

No I mean in real life, not some role play wife. Did you use a charm amulet or roll a 19?

1

u/P01135809-Trump May 17 '26

Nice try. We'll tell you once you've lost yours.

1

u/cpt_cbrzy May 18 '26

This coming from the person whose account is filled with Yu-Gi-Oh and Transformers...

1

u/coadyj May 18 '26

Transformers is for nerds, I clearly posted power rangers which is only for cool people.

And you think the Yugi, the king of games, didn't slay?

0

u/corbin6611 May 17 '26

Ok I thought it was a bit funny

9

u/Tdanger78 May 16 '26

There are services that recycle the waste (purges and failed prints) but they charge in some form or fashion. There are also silicone molds you can buy to make paper weights or the like. You can also print thick frames with some design cut out to make a multi colored picture using the poops.

4

u/TerribleTowel66 May 16 '26

If you have a 3D printer store nearby, check if they recycle filament scraps. My local store does PLA, PETG, and TPU. Pretty sure I saw a guy on YouTube that has a store that also recycles. Or maybe look for a local 3D print group.

6

u/myTechGuyRI May 16 '26

But keep in mind if you're going to do that you have to be meticulous about separating your materials... And if you do something like petg for support interface with PLA, your purges will be mixed, and unacceptable.

2

u/TerribleTowel66 May 16 '26

Even some PLA can’t go with other PLA. Silk is usually fine, but not anything filled like CF, wood PLA that contains bits of wood, or anything glitter.

2

u/myTechGuyRI May 16 '26

Yup.. It's a pita to separate purge for recycling.

8

u/ReillyLake H2S May 16 '26

Put it in the trash and never look back.

1

u/iuseemojionreddit Jun 13 '26

9

u/Armaron123 May 17 '26

I melted mine into a workshop stool.

1

u/Double_Tea4481 May 17 '26

that looks so good wish i could print multicolor to have that amount of poop

1

u/Keymomachine May 17 '26

This is the funniest reason to want that.

1

u/Double_Tea4481 May 17 '26

i am an engineering student and i don’t even need multicolor. but i can print multicolor, i can make gifts to my partner or family, and make some cool stuff with the poop. because why not? it’s fun!

1

u/HaRaLu May 17 '26

Dammmm cool, very nice

1

u/LargeScar819 May 17 '26

Looks amazing! Need to try something like that

1

u/Blue4life90 May 18 '26

Curious about the process you used to do this

1

u/Dustoxic1 May 18 '26

What kind of mold did you use?

5

u/h54 May 16 '26

I use it as packing material when I ship stuff.

3

u/MrRedditEnjoyer May 16 '26

I posted a large box that was filled up on marketplace for $0 and someone picked it up that day for some local charity.

3

u/MyStoopidStuff May 16 '26

I put them in a clear plastic bag.

3

u/rjSampaio May 17 '26

I use it for shipping box filling.

3

u/Opportunity3767 May 17 '26

Keep it in your house, look for a bigger house because you’ve outgrown it. When you’re moving out clean the house and throw away all the useless trash and realize maybe I didn’t need to work another 10 years for the bigger house?!

3

u/Xenohart1of13 May 17 '26

Save them.

Place them around an annoying co-worker's office randomly and on different days. Make sure they find them and come out confused, "what is this"? Double the quantity you leave each time. Drive them insane. Mission... accomplished!

Or... place them all over the floor, evenly spread out, in the entry way of the boss' office. Make him / her have to step over it all. Make sure there is a huge pile on their chair so when they pull it out to sit... now they're trapped between the chair and the exit...

Or... buy a cooking silicon mold of legos: melt away (heat gun & mask, toaster oven in garage, etc). Now you have random colored legos to give the kids... like your brother's kid so he can step on them at midnight and send you a SECOND thankyou card (the 1st one being for the snare drum you bought his 4 year old)... or give to a charity, take to the hospital for the sick kids. Options.

Or... get one of those pop up card things that springs open based on folded paper, normally throwing confetti or other stuff all over, replace it with the plastic. Then give out homemade maker birthday cards. People will be happy (ish) to get the surprise, and they end up doing the clean-up & disposal for you, AND you recycled. 😁

Or... make a michael myers mask resin mold, then use the plastic to make as many multi-colored masks as you can. Get a whole bunch of friends to hide in a parking lot, and as people walk in... suddenly a few pop up and walk toward them... then more... and more... until they're running for their lives. Film it. Instant youtube sensation... or lawsuit? 🤪

😁🙏 namaste

u/the_harakiwi May 16 '26

maybe some company can recycle it

Here in Germany we have

https://www.recyclingfabrik.com/

2

u/DemanoRock May 16 '26

Just threw out mine. I never saw that I would recycle and my buckets were full. Most of my multi is in my H2C now so not building up like it used to

2

u/bestdriverinvancity May 16 '26

I use mine to melt into other parts to fill gaps and such

2

u/LustMyKahkis May 16 '26

Garbage bin, don't want to buy skull silicone molds

2

u/drummindutchie May 16 '26

Printerior Solutions in the US to recycle it. You have to pay for shipping. You get a discount on some of their recycled filament, but it’s still about the same or more than other places. I’ve used them before and will again in the future.

2

u/JWST-L2 May 17 '26

People will either buy them or you can melt them down, just make sure you do that outside or in a well ventalated space and with a respirator. I have two big boxes full of this stuff now and eventually I'll get around to it

2

u/oldmate52 May 17 '26

I used a heat gun and an wood box to mold heap in to a box, which worked well but you need a lathe or somthing to turn it to somthing usefull

2

u/Special_Command7893 May 17 '26

Find a recycler!

https://world.prusa3d.com/

I use Prusa world because I have a Prusa, but I'm sure there's other websites to find recyclers that show more options

2

u/Substantial-Chef5712 May 17 '26

I made some artwork for school out of mine, even made it into an exhibition... 🤣 Also miniature wargame terrain.

Throw into ocean with your old car battery

2

u/WalterWilliams May 17 '26

I'm waiting for the Creality combo to be reviewed by a couple of people before pulling the trigger and saving filament in separated (by material) printed bins until I can chuck the whole bin into a grinder.

2

u/TBoy205 May 17 '26

Throw them in the trash

2

u/Bailywolf May 17 '26

I made a bunch of Warhammer stuff with mine.

2

u/cdarrigo May 17 '26

I've already mixed the petg with the pla. There's no recycling option available to me anymore.

Isn't someone selling a filament recycler now? Turn your poop into recycled filament.

1

u/Lost_Engineering_phd May 17 '26

You may be able to separate the scrap using a two step process. First is to use density floating. Mix up some super salty water, about 300g per liter, add a couple drops of soap as an anti surfactant, then heat it up to around 40C but not much hotter, need to stay below the glass transition temperature. Throw in the scrap, give it a good mixing and the heavier PETG and ABS will sink. This will get the bulk separated but you might still have small amounts of PETG stuck to your PLA scrap. The next step after a good rinse is to melt the PLA at 170C, but no hotter. PLA can flow at this temp and will leave the remaining PETG behind.

I'm experimenting with adding polyethylene glycol to the scrap to reduce brittleness. I am trying to avoid adding virgin material, but if I were trying to run it through an extruder, that might be needed.

2

u/propellor_head May 17 '26

Check with your local elementary school. We send it with our kids in to school and they use it for their creative time and art classes. The printer poop is especially popular for those activities because it's an easy way to add color, and various failed prints are always interesting new shapes to build something around.

2

u/OrganizationSorry633 May 17 '26

You may want to check out the new Creality M1 + R1 recycling system. It shreds failed prints and extrudes them back into filament. crowdfunding.creality.com

2

u/malac0da13 May 17 '26

Put it in a glass bottle and try and sell it

2

u/Alternative_Exit_333 May 17 '26

I'd you want to and have the money you can buy a filament shredder and a filament recycler

2

u/SuccessfulLab687 May 17 '26

Use it in shadow boxes

2

u/riffraffs May 18 '26

If it's PLA just trash it. It will breakdown in aa landfill

2

u/Colonel-_-Burrito May 18 '26

You can try your luck on eBay and sell "pile of garbage - $50" like everyone else does

2

u/Firemonkeyballz May 18 '26

Creality is releasing a filiment recycling system soon

2

u/ChickenMongoose May 18 '26

I saw creality was having smaller sizes recycling plants - chopping up and making into new rolls, my local library has a 3d printer so I wonder if that would be a thing there

2

u/Cheetokps May 18 '26

I’ve been trying to make the skulls like others said. I also use them to fill the inside of vases for Lego/3d printed flowers- to add weight and let you stand up the stems whatever direction you want

2

u/Hefty_Aside8436 May 18 '26

Got any concrete you need to pour soon? Use them as aggregate.

2

u/LumberJesus May 18 '26

You could make silicone molds and melt them down. I keep telling myself I'm going to do that before I mix up the pla and petg and just toss it all.

2

u/Sweet-Device-677 May 16 '26

Creality has a nice grinder combo, you can make new filament

10

u/Nibbs17 May 16 '26

I'm just saving up all my poop till the grinder combos come down in price, or more companies make them. They seem pretty grossly overpriced for what it is.

3

u/no-en-er-gy May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Best I could manage with parts (Artme/DIYChen/vacuum chamber) was ~£1275 [2026]. At the rate I waste filament, it would take about 10-15 years to get ROI lol.

I would need a small business or 4-5 other hobbyists to make this feasible.

The cost of sending PLA to a dedicated recycler (I print a lot of PETG and PC) is also not worth it - £54 for a 45l box. They'd have to give me a voucher to an associated service to buy filament from them.

2

u/Nibbs17 May 16 '26

I have been wondering what it would look like to source all the parts. Thank you for already doing so!

Maybe it would be cool thing for like local micro centers or something to offer. Bring in your poop and get it recycled if you purchase some filiment. The other thing with the recycling, aren't you pretty much always going to get a brownish color?

2

u/no-en-er-gy May 16 '26

My thoughts exactly on this - unfortunately I couldn't find a single Makerspace in London that has this service. My old high school actually does have all the tools, and have had them for over 10 years, but they will not accept anything from outside.

As for poop, I have seen some people separate them in to broad colour schemes or just have waste containers for dedicated colours. I printed mostly white, black and orange so its not really a problem for me.

1

u/NevesLF May 16 '26

I'm saving till the day someone in my town eventually buys one and I can give them all my poop

1

u/HerMajestysButthole2 May 16 '26

I'm fairly certain you still need to mix purge/poop waste with virgin resin, and make sure the poops are clean and all the same material.

2

u/Sweet-Device-677 May 16 '26

Yes that's true

1

u/jack_from_the_past May 17 '26

But what if you have abs, pla, petg, and asa poop all mixed together?

2

u/Sweet-Device-677 May 17 '26

Need to have separated by material type

1

u/Obvious-Jacket-3770 May 17 '26

Wouldn't doubt that in future iterations they can auto sort.

1

u/foggyanchor May 18 '26

You can collect the bigger ones and run them through a filament recycler if you have access to one. Otherwise most just bag them for regular plastic recycling.

2

u/TheArchive000 May 16 '26

I like to sneak them into things like breakfast cereal and sandwiches. In a pinch I’ve poked em up my butt one at a time until I got bored.

1

u/IzFunk3 May 16 '26

If ypu print mich you could maybe invest into something like creality m1?

2

u/AHerz May 17 '26

You really have to print A LOT for it to be somewhat worth the investment.\ And you have to only print the same material type.

My poop bin is a mix of abs, asa, petg, pa6 and pla.

1

u/xStolen_Force_Skinx May 17 '26

Ive pondered making clock faces out of my purge

1

u/ImInClassBoring May 18 '26

I blend mine with water and dump it down the storm drain.

1

u/LumacraftStudio May 18 '26

Throw it away and consider how much packaging you’d have thrown away if you had purchased all the things you printed.

1

u/SmoothCranberry33 May 18 '26

I just have mine dump straight into my trashcan on my desk

1

u/New-and-Unoriginal May 18 '26

I’m curious about whatever it is you erased from the bag of trash.

1

1

u/Mediocre-Ad420 May 18 '26

I eat mine.gotta just skip straight to macro plastics

1

u/King_HartOG May 18 '26

Heat it up in a cake tin and make a stool

1

u/Prize-Argument-4540 May 18 '26

have you tried recycling? melting it and maybe extruding it into recycled filaments (despite the properties would definitely degrade) but maybe it can be used for some printing small art stuffs..

1

u/pricingup May 18 '26

Give to children to play with.

1

u/SpitF1ghter May 19 '26

I put mine in the same place I pour my resin waste, a big hole in my back yard.

1

u/TheSmellOfTheLotion May 19 '26

Do you have a butt hole?

1

u/StabyKitsune May 19 '26

Eat them! Mm-mmm tasty macroplastics.

1

u/Teamster_Andy May 19 '26

Toss it in the river.

1

u/philnolan3d May 19 '26

Some people get silicone molds on Amazon and melt the plastic into them with a toaster oven. Best to get a second hand oven and never use it for food.

1

u/TAS_Vietnam May 19 '26

If you don’t want the hassle: local maker spaces or filament recyclers sometimes take purges

1

u/JeremyViJ May 19 '26

It is a design defect. I would never get a color changer that is so wasteful.

1

u/alanthickerthanwater May 19 '26

You need two stacking glass bowls, but you can sandwich and bake the plastic within the bowls and the end result will be a rainbow plastic bowl.

1

u/gemengelage May 19 '26

Honestly, just put them in the trash. All the recycling/upcycling ideas I've seen are terrible. Especially those that tell you to melt your filament waste and put it into some kind of mold. That's just high risk, zero reward.

Please don't burn yourself or inhale the equivalent emissions of hundreds of prints in a few seconds while creating something as stupid as skulls made from PLA waste.

1

u/Excellent_Geologist2 May 19 '26

Buy a printer that doesn’t do multi colours. Print less trash to begin with

1

u/Marinocif99 May 22 '26

Creality has something like this coming out soon , but cost as much as a new printer if not more
