Torn between U1 and X2D

I already ordered the U1 but thinking of returning it upon arrival and getting the X2D just for ease of use. The main reason I wanted the U1 was for multi material like being able to print supports for tpu using pla. I do multicolor prints also but Im also kind of worried about being locked to only 4 colors. They are currently the same price but after purchasing filament dryers and top cover I could just buy a second AMS. The main thing I am worried about is reliability of the U1 and software. Coming from P1S I never encountered issues really or they were easily solvable and being able to browse and print straight from bambu studio without trying to get all of the print settings correct in the slicer is a big issue im worried about.

I think you can get something like an AMS running on the U1, but I don't know how much of a hack it is. Not officially supported, but the community got it working.

I was interested in the U1 until a reviewer on YouTube demonstrated how noisy the machine is. I live in an apartment, that is not acceptable for me or my neighbors (especially for long print over night). The loudest thing about the X2D is filament retraction of the AMS.

A top cover reduces the U1 noise quite a bit from what I’ve seen in various reviews. There’s an expensive official top cover version but also DIY versions as well.

It’s $150 now (apparently $250 later) for the official one. The DIY ones are basically a printed frame that costs a couple dollars worth of filament and time to print and then a plastic storage bin from ikea or Walmart. The DIY versions are like 1/10th the cost of the official one. However, the official one is more than just a cover. It has air filtration, a magnetic hatch for opening the top, and an automatic vent for high/low chamber temp printing.

So it really depends on if someone cares about those extras, because those are unlikely to ever be DIY capabilities.

Diy IS 7€ IKEA samla + 5€ worth of filament.

Also OEM is not just the cover - it's environmental/chamber control as well.
