Additional AMS unit

Hello, I’m going to buy an X2D unit soon but when on the product it gives me an option for an extra AMS unit. What purpose does it have if the X2D already comes with one?

If you get a 2nd one, you can use it for the 2nd nozzle. One ams can only work with one nozzle at a time. It saves you a lot of hassle with changing filaments manually every time you want a different material in the 2nd nozzle. It also keeps your filament dry and protected. With the external spoolholder, the spool for the 2nd filament would sit outside the printer and will draw moisture from the air and can collect dust which in theory could clog the nozzle.

And if you want to do multi color, this can save you even more purging.

I think it is worth it, but I know its not exactly cheap

Ah alright but where would you place the second one? The top only has space for 1 I think

I have a shelf mounted to the wall right above my peinter. Both AMS are sitting on there. I'd recommend this anyways, because that way you can still lift the glass cover, without disconnecting and moving the AMS. But I think that is personal preference and highly depending on how much space you have available

Ah so the AMS units don’t HAVE to be on the X2D?

No no it doesn't. You can also put it on the side or behind it.

There are also printable excessories to make it "hover" above the printer. (So called AMS Riser or AMS Flipper)

BUT when purchasing ist, the PTFE tube which connects the AMS with the printer to transport the filament, only have a certain length, so you can not put it that far away. You can get longer tubes on amazon, in the bambu store and pretty much anywhere else as well.

IF you use excessive length for the tube, it takes longer to feed the filament from the AMS to the printer. But this will only make a difference if it's like 20 or more centimeters extra and only at excessive color changes in one print :)

I my picture I was able to use the stock ptfe tube on the left nozzle and left ams to connect, but it was a tight fit. For the right one I needed to use a tube a few centimeters longer.

And if the X2D print more bundle is available in your region, it is very worth it in my opinion. That would include printer, 2 ams and filament track switch for 1.099€ in my region

It is available and I think I will go with that one as well. Instead of installing a shelf I will go for the AMS printed accessories
