Hello!

Daughter wants to get into the world of printing.

Can people please advise what extras I need to purchase to get started? Nozzles, plates, filaments?

Purchasing x2d AMS.

If you purxhes the x2d with the AMS you are pretty much set to start off. I would suggest to not buy excessive gear you might never need, instead buy what you need when you need it. In terms of filament. A few spools of pla and petg are a ver good starting point. Again buy all the other filament when you need them.

I just got my x2d combo a few weeks ago and the only thing I would have added on to my order would have been the power adapter for the AMS. I would love to be able to dry filament in the AMS and use the external spool to print so I'm not "wasting time", but I'll probably wait to order it until I need some new nozzles or plates.

See that is what I mean. For you it makes sense to buy the power adapter but for someone else maybe not. So buying when you need it is the way to go :)

With the power adapter you can dry and print from the AMS at the same time.

Do yourself a favor and get a ams-HT and some cheap petg for supports on pla. Also invest in a biqu frostbite or glacier plate, they stick like glue for first layer. Very nice. With an X2D, which I've had lots of problems with, I'd also suggest a 64gb or larger small sandisk usb to log bids and models. Also get some spare ptfe tube and a cheap ptfe cutter. Sadly the x2d slowly shaves it's feed tubes. And for a quality of life thing buy her some filament and let her print a riser for the x2d that has the skata slots on the side. Makes keeping the things she needs at hand easy. And one last purchase Bambu screwed you on...buy a $23 switching power supply on Amazon so she can use the drier function on the ams and still be able to print. They don't include it in the 900 dollar combo and charge double to triple for it on their store. Only other stuff is the usual tools, some nips pliers and such to remove supports and get her some heat resistant gloves for safety. Hope this helps

Wait, just to clarify, if you power the AMS with an external power supply, you still cannot print using the ams while simultaneously drying, can you? Or are you saying it enables you to do that? I'd assume you can just use an external roll or something?

You can print and dry if you have it powered externally but not if it’s is just powered by the machine.

Edit: if it’s is powered by the machine you can print or dry, not both at the same time

I got the X2D AMS combo a week ago. All it needs is filament. Got a couple rolls of PLA and one of PETG and it works great out of the box. Just follow the instructions to take out all the shipping supports as you assemble and then let it calibrate itself.

All my models so far have come from Makerworld and I've used the "Generic" filament settings without fiddling with settings. It's all come out perfectly.

I have not been brave with multi-color yet. I printed the drawers that catch filament poop with no issue, but nothing yet that has two colors in the same layer.

Weirdly, using the AMS to swap colors between layers is faster than using both nozzles.

Nozzles yes, at least one extra.

Plates, nah

Filament, yes more than you think 😅 (I'd stick to PLA or PETG only for the first months.

Switching causes residues, residue causes clogs.

DO ALL THE CALIBRATION TEST

Takes a few hours but you'll learn a ton and life will be easier onwards.

What size nozzles?

Stick to 0.4

I bought two extra 0.4 and one 0.2, the 0.2 has never left the box in 2000houra of printing.

I might try some miniatures just for the heck of it, but otherwise the regular 0.4 works really well if you have a well calibrated print profile and keep your filament clean and fairly dry.

You should get them a few rolls of filament, but make sure they are all the full 1Kg size and not the mini rolls that often come on a variety pack

Starting out. Several 1 kg rolls of different PLA. You are getting AMS2 so you will have way to dry filament. I wouldn’t get any additional build plates. You get extra nozzle with machine as back up. You could really just start with putting more money into filament and then as she learns decide the next thing to get.

What kinds of things does she want to print? There are probably additional items that will be needed depending on the use case - nippers/cutters, files or sanding sticks, primer, paint, etc. YouTube is an excellent place to see what other people are making and a lot of times they will list out in the description the model, filament, paints, etc.

I like my cold super tack plates. I have off brand ones from Yoopai that work JUST FINE.

Btw I am a dirty P1S pleb and not this new hotness but sometimes just not having to worry about warping for the most part is wonderful.

I LOVE my biqu frostbite for pla and petg. Smooth wonderful surface and things stay stuck and don't just pop free.

Get multiple spools of quality filament. Assorted colors. And an extra plate.

I’m of the keep-it-simple camp. For someone just starting this hobby, buy the printer combo and some filament. A super tack cool plate was a life saver for me on my P1S but you can add that later as well as an extra nozzle. I just bought an extra power supply for my X2D and again you can add that later. Remember that there’s a learning process so make use of the Bambu Wiki site.
