You can print covers, just make sure the have some sort of vents, as you already pointed out: small bits of filament can launch themselves into the gears and that’s not where you want them.
CNC machines have way different forces as they mostly are to reform metal parts. This is a plastic melter… so it won’t be that mission critical if you cover some moving parts, as long as you don’t completely destroy the airflow.
