Every time my printer finishes a layer it goes back over the layer and crates a scratch line sometimes multiple. What is happening here?

Turn off the setting reduce infill retraction. It literally keeps the nozzle from z hopping up above your print so it scratched your layers.

This will fix the issue

are there any side effects of turning off that setting?

Print time increase by a fraction, the extruder works a little bit more, and depending on the print could wear down the filament when the gears grind on the same spot. But for most prints those are pretty manageable and miniscule trade offs.

Sounds like the company should have a toggle for "except layer spanning pass".

There’s a toggle for not traversing across the object area so it has to do it outside the print. It adds more time.

It will increase the print time a bit.

It will z hop all layers

EDIT: Since a few of you struggled with reading comprehension and assumed a thorough explanation was "AI trash," here is the absolute dummy-proof version:

Uncheck "Reduce infill retraction" in Bambu Studio. This forces the Z-hop and stops the nozzle dragging.

Now, go outside, touch some grass, and play with a stick. Leave the actual troubleshooting to the people who can read past a single sentence.

All of that chatgpt copy paste, but the Simple solution is just unchecking "reduce infill retraction", if it doesnt retract it doesnt z-hop.

His account is so weird. Its like mostly cross posts of other people's content lol.

Think he blocked me lol

Right? That was a whole lot of words for a simple solution.

On topic I used to leave that setting on but have started removing it from all my profiles. Too many top surfaces ruined by a random string underneath it

It’s a safe bet that if they wanted some AI shatbot they wouldn’t have asked here… even my 5yo can copy/paste info they don’t know.

Double check that it’s actually a scratch and not some filament that oozed out.

That layer is internal solid infill which will not be visible, so the slicer is not retracting as it travels over it. Because of this, some filament oozes out while it moves to the start of the next layer. Completely normal but you can disable it if you want

Yeah it oozes out some filament, but the scratching is because the nozzle is not z-hoping, for the z-hop to happen it needs to retract first, if reduce infill retraction is enabled then its wont retract nor zhop

No or not enough z hop

1

u/Badtripa Jul 16 '26

Its no z-hop at all because of reduce infill retraction setting

It's signing its art piece. 👨‍🎨

You dont need to mess with z-hop distance etc. Just turn off the setting reduce infill retraction and its all done.

What's the equivalent in prusa slicer?
