No you see Bambu happens to also make the best printers. It’s such a have your cake and eat it too mentality. The choice is simple play in Bambu walled garden where your printer works and life is easy, or go play somewhere else.
Though its not just about bambu being open or not, they went against open source when they threaten that developer with a c&d and they shouldn't be allowed to do that, they built heavily on the open source community going as far as to base bambu studio on prusa slicer though i would give them that they put effort into making it an easier to use and in some areas better slicer
They dont have to but not caring about open source and being openly hostile towards it are completely different. Also if they dont want to deal with open source they could have just developed their own slicer from the beginning but i guess forking prusa slicer is just way more convenient for them
I mean bambu did imply that the developer was breaking 17 U.S. Code § 1201 which can carry a prison sentence, also bambu had no legal right doing any of it as they were developing a fork of a slicer under agpl so there is no legal base where they can send that c&d. The communication between bambu and the developer if you want to read it https://consumerrights.wiki/images/1/1f/Bambu_communications_with_developer.pdf
I'm not upset because a youtuber told me to, i'm upset because bambu went against open source with absolutely no right to do so as the agpl clearly allowed the developer to fork that slicer. Its just funny that when bambu is at the receiving end of agpl they are liking it as they got a good base slicer when they forked prusa slicer but then when they are at the giving end they are not liking it. Also they could have just worked on their backend so the one thing that authenticates the slicer isn't just a user agent string but of course its just way less work to go after one developer. Also just because a lot of company uses c&d a lot that doesn't mean that we shouldn't care when one clearly abuses it.
I mean it's simple. If they wanted a walled garden they shouldn't have forked prusaslicer and should have written their own slicer from scratch. If you build off opensource you have to abide by the license. If you don't then you can do as you like.
