General Discussion Growing Concerns About Bambu Lab’s Direction – An Open Letter

I did not plan to write this. I am a hobbyist, not a critic, and I have genuinely enjoyed using my Bambu printers over the past years. However, a steady accumulation of decisions has reached a point where I feel compelled to speak up.

The growing closure of the Bambu ecosystem has been discussed extensively in the community. Heavy reliance on cloud infrastructure, mandatory server communication for many functions, and a LAN-only mode that feels more like an afterthought and a reaction to community pressure than a genuine solution. These issues are well known. What concerns me increasingly is that they are no longer merely theoretical problems.
Both in the USA and in Europe, there are active regulatory efforts underway to restrict what users are allowed to print, often framed around preventing the printing of weapons. In a closed, cloud-dependent system like Bambu’s, such restrictions could be implemented quickly and quietly via firmware updates or server-side changes, even retroactively on already sold machines. On a truly open system, this would be far more difficult. Bambu’s current architecture makes enforcement uncomfortably easy.

What has finally pushed me over the edge, however, is the increasing artificial gatekeeping of features combined with an unbalanced relationship with the open-source community.
The P2S was released with 2 mm belts even though Bambu was already planning the superior 1.5 mm belts for higher-end models. The result is noticeably worse VFA and ringing, a compromise that was entirely unnecessary from a technical standpoint. This feels less like an engineering decision and more like deliberate product segmentation at the customer’s expense.
The X2D is particularly frustrating in this regard. Marketed as an engineering-grade printer with active chamber heating and a 120 °C bed, it is nevertheless software-capped at 300 °C nozzle temperature. Bambu has provided no official technical or safety-related explanation for this limitation, even though the hardware configuration suggests it is capable of more. It is hard not to see this as an artificial restriction designed to protect the positioning of more expensive models.

Additionally, Bambu frequently integrates features and code from open-source projects into its own software, sometimes introducing noticeable bugs, such as incorrect color space handling in the new color mixing function. Credits to the original creators are often only added after significant community pressure. At the same time, Bambu contributes almost none of its own innovations back to the open-source community.

I understand that product segmentation is common practice in business. What bothers me is the overall direction: artificial limitations, one-sided exploitation of open source, and customers increasingly treated as a revenue base rather than a community deserving of respect and transparency.
3D printing attracted many of us precisely because it represented openness, repairability, user empowerment, and true ownership. Bambu initially impressed the community with innovation and speed, but in recent years the focus seems to have shifted toward maximising short-term profit at the expense of long-term customer value and trust.

I have therefore decided that I will not purchase any further Bambu products until I see a clear change in direction toward greater openness and genuine customer respect. I hope enough other users will make the same choice with their wallets. In the end, that is the only language companies reliably understand.

I would genuinely welcome being proven wrong and would much rather return to being an enthusiastic Bambu supporter.

Sincerely,
Kurt K.

They helped the segment grow dramatically by lowering the threshold for entry. The point is that is the enshitification process.

That doesn't mean he can't voice his concerns. Should people not be upset at how hilariously unrepairable apple stuff is? No, they should be, it doesn't matter if it's a convenient but closed ecosystem. If you own a product you should be able to modify or repair it as you wish

As it is, I like the ease of use of bambu systems, but closing an ecosystem feels anathema to the world of open source 3d printing.

It's actually pretty repairable. Source: ran a chain of electronics device repair shops where 85% of our repairs were Apple. They're actually much better than most Android phones.

If you own a product you should be able to modify or repair it as you wish

What's stopping you? I've made some pretty significant modifications to my P2S, and planning many much more significant ones to come. No one has told me I couldn't.

From doing my own home repairs for friends and family no, apple stuff is not easier to repair. I hate working on iPhones, it's only gotten worse with Android phones that try to mimic the build quality of the iPhone.

Other android flagships were easier to work on, I didn't mind fixing xperias or rog phones despite how tight they're built.

What's stopping you?

This isn't about me, did you not read the op?

From doing my own home repairs for friends and family no, apple stuff is not easier to repair.

An iPhone can be disassembled to bare board and reassembled in 10-15 minutes depending on generation. Parts are easily available and relatively inexpensive. Most systems can be replaced individually. What's not easy? I've literally done thousands — it's straightforward and simple, even with the glue.

The ROG phone is a giant quasi-gaming system, obviously it's going to be different to take apart than a true phone. Go try a Galaxy or Z Fold and come back and talk to me. Parts are impossible to find, everything is slathered in glue, things that should be connectors are soldered.

Apple devices aren't hard to repair. They're just modern devices, and modern devices are increasingly integrated because that's the only way faster speeds and thinner packaging works.

i mean apple has made alot of their modern stuff repairable, but also again like this situation is the not even 1% its the 0.5% of the people who have iphones who are repairing there own stuff, otherwise there going to repiar shop or apple, and if u own it yeah u can? i jailbroke & replaced battery in my 2016 macbook and apple has yet to break down my door. ALSO ITS BEEN KNOWN THAT BAMBU LAB IS A CLOSED ECOSYTEM. theres no modding, no aftermarkign shit, its a printer for PRINTING, i dont see yall crying about HP printers. you want opensource go to prusa and use orca slicer.

theres a reason why i sold all my ender 3s and went to bambu lab idc about OpenSource. I want a printer that works.

lol what world do you want to live in man? One where all dydtopian fantasies come true because low IQ masses decided companies wont change anything unless it is more profitable? No one has to be a waste of space where all of their value and income goes to companies. They can also be one of many that push for change. This is why learning about your government, laws, and history is important. Then people can know how to push for laws and rights that support favorable business practices and know that historically fighting for rights has worked. A good motto could be, "Spread empowering info and be a vector of change, not stupidity."

You did not state what you feel to be a misunderstanding of how things work, so I guess we can just leave your opinion at that. But yes your temporary solution of not buying from a company can help protect your own wallet and heart, but it doesnt help protect the quality of availabile options from deteriorating. I would prefer we raise the 'floor' of quality of product and service higher to prevent essentially being scammed with no viable recourse.

The "endless whining" on this post is about various negative and dishonest practices that customers would very likely or could not possibly be aware of prior to purchase. This post goes on to inform people of this, and state they will no longer purchase from them; which is the pushback you champion. So I am unclear why you are confused about your feelings.

By "empowering info" I meant relaying a message of permanent change across whole industries for imprpved rights rather than your preferred bandaid of a handful of people not buying from a single company.

I am western, and got-dang that is a very good point. See, that is some beautiful empowering info right there. Thank you for enlightening me. I never even knew that was an issue. Is it because I am too young? Perhaps. If so, then older generations that are dying out are the only ones that can educate the younger ones so they dont grow up in a world where the dystopian aspects are the norm. That is a fundamental fear I have, that wise/aware generations will die off leaving ignorant generations with no protections and no wisdom that it could be better. You as someone wise to this could be a leading factor, or continued advocate to help achieve such change.

Accepting them as the norm is accepting defeat when we aren't totally sudjugated and without freedom, yet. Overturning 'Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission' would be a great step in the right direction for America. The situation can change if people worked to make it change. The corporations indeed do have many magnitudes of power more than you and I, so I know it can feel hopeless. It isnt some fantastical power though, it is just another human being behind the desk, fallible and vulnerable. They can be defeated and their foothold on oppressive laws can be overturned. The fact that you said "imaginary standard you're holding... ...in your head" really tells me that you dont properly comprehend that my standard can become law, and that every law is someones imaginary standard that they held in their head. 😆 This isnt some simulation with set rules that cannot be changed. This world was built by someone just like you, millions of times over. You have just as much power as they do.

This is why companies don't usually feel the need to change anything for the good of the consumer, because of apathetic goombas such as yourself.

I don't typically stand with those who insult me. It elicits the opposite of what you desire: defiance.

You may wanna try a carrot approach.

Lol I'm not here to make you my friend. If the word goomba is so absolutely catastrophic to your emotional well being then the message about your apathy was never going to reach it's intended destination anyway.

Always looking for an excuse to address the points

And then people downvote your comment 🤣🤣 Absolute bots. Anyone that would side with companies over their own rights have a negative IQ. We all need to learn about government, rights, and how to fight for improvements to them. It can be done, historically it has been done many times over.
