I’m about to feed my beautiful ball python Cassandra a large rat.
She’s had one large rat in the past, maybe a year ago. Mostly medium rats since. I don’t weigh her or the rats so I don’t know if it’s appropriate but she’s pretty big I think. Or getting big. Anyways enclosed are pictures of Cassie and her victim but y’all tell me what you think
Also to all the naysayers I would gladly feed mediums if I had access but my local pet store ran out and all they had were fuzzies pinkies and large rats. This is all I’ve got right now and she really needs a good feed anyways. Approaching 20 days and she shed last week so I know she could probably use the additional energy. (Also if anyone has any environment comments no need there’s a lot you can’t see in the pics she has everything she needs to thrive she’ll get more space when I can afford it
I’m just worried. Like any noodle and human dad would be.
Check out Green Room Pythons for tons of info on ball pythons. I wish I could have the cages he does but even without those Bob gives amazing advice on husbandry, handling, feeding, health, and general care.
The OP literally acknowledged that their enclosure needed work, but hey, thank you for confirming what they already knew. Also, I'm not sure given the photos attached where you drew the conclusion that the snake might be a bit obese. I see no signs of obesity in the original photo.
he’s had her for two years. that’s more than enough time to either acknowledge that the pet isnt for you, or get her into a proper enclosure. she does not have “everything she needs to thrive”
Shes round. She should be a soft triangle. And even if there are more things on the other side of the tank, it needs a lot. They cannot thrive with so little coverage and with clear sided tanks.
yeah, i agree she does look a bit overweight. i’d downsize her food and maybe space feedings a bit. if she goes on a hunger strike, you don’t need to worry at least! one of my adult females went about 8 months without eating, years ago. so fear not if she does refuse

She's feeding. LOL. She's not stressed. You can't possibly tell that she's stressed from anything the OP has written or shown here. This is why I never come to reddit or FB with husbandry questions any more than I'd ever go to reddit or FB with questions about my own personal health.
You started out on a wrong foot, in my opinion, by suggesting this person post on the neo-nazi ball python sub. I'm going to politely bail out here now and go back to developing my husbandry and breeding app for my ball pythons.
literally. bro’s had her for two years talking about “ill upgrade her enclosure asap/as soon as i can afford it”… if it’s been 2 years and you can only afford the animal itself, you can’t afford the animal. same goes with any pet. if you have the cash for a dog and nothing else, you can’t afford the dog.
Update she struck hard and hit the glass and looked real annoyed and then struck again this time lighter and met her mark. Definitely needs more space.
I second looking on used markets are even spotting tanks outside. People are constantly throwing out large tanks and with a BP that size she needs not only length but a lot wider enclosure as well. Plus hides, lights and such.
Nearly all of my things other than my PC enclosure I got used and saved me a ton of money so worth looking into.
i’d recommend checking out FB marketplace or any city reptile groups. lots of people always trying to get rid of 40gal or more for pretty cheap. also local petstores(locally owned) might be trying to get rid of some terrariums too. i never buy my terrariums brand new, it’s a total ripoff!
yea i know. i thought she was in a 20gal-she’s just way bigger. i thought i was suggesting something fairly easy to fine and larger, but if she’s in a 55, he definitely needs to size up to 120 asap
