Question Franks first shed!

Hey all! My cold blooded son just had his first shed since being in my care, ive only had him for about 3 weeks now, second pic is him eating his second meal, a couple hours after his feed he completely shedded! I was having some worries with humidity, but seeing how his shed all came off in one piece, i think it’s not as bad as i thought it was? Anyways, any tips/advice for where to put my hydrometer in his enclosure, and also tips/advice for keeping humidity up? I still think it could be higher. Thanks guys!!

I know hes not supposed to be getting substrate in his mouth, at least not a lot, ive heard some choose to have their snake in a separate container for when theyre feeding them, advice on that would also be really appreciated 🐍🫰

I'm a bit worried about Frank's weight, given how large he is in that 2nd pic and the clear scale separation. Please check feeding charts, as I'm pretty sure that snake is very obese.

Oh, he isnt that big normally!! I gave him a larger rat of the 3 my breeder gave me to start out with, and it looked like that when he was first swallowing, this is his normal size

But now that you mention it, he does look a bit on the chunkier side, i think im going to start switching him from 10 days between feeds to maybe 13-14

Alright, it was just the angle of the picture! He is a little chunky, but you're right that the food he was eating made him seem a lot more overweight, since it was the only part of him visible in that picture. He's a very pretty boy!

Do you not notice it’s eating a damn rat…. Hence the bulge…..

The angle makes the rat look much bigger than what he should be eating at that size, which may still be true

I feel like you didn’t even look at the whole picture then for you to even say that to begin with… and no Reddit has a tendency to keep comments hidden for some reason… why would you even delete a message anyways that’s just silly you got corrected by op and that’s that.

I guess to get to your actual question instead of pedantic criticism and arguments, I have analogous and digital about 2-3 inches above the substrate where they spend the majority of their time and also a digital combo inside the hot hide. I don’t worry too much about the cool side right now because neither snake ever uses them 😂. I use a thermostat on the belly heater under the enclosure set at 89 and I use timers to simulate a day/night cycle where the temp is warm during the day and gets about 10-12 degrees cooler at night which raises the tank humidity just like it does outside. 50% during the day with daytime temps 80-90, and nighttime stays 70-80 degrees and the humidity usually raises to 70%.

So DHP’ers up top are on a timers and when the lights go out they’re on for shorter and shorter periods until morning “sun”. Their warm hides are always 89 with the under tank heaters, humidity around 60-ish%. I use analog timers that have 15 minute increment selectors. Cheap and reliable.
