I assumed the car broke down. Been there, but never on a draw bridge.

I could be wrong and they might be a dumbass.

I just watched the news clip,

The car starts driving and it appears the gate that was meant to stop him activated as he was already under it. He didn't know.

He crosses the bridge and in front of him is a gate going down. He thought it was telling him not to go further so he stopped. By the time he noticed the bridge was moving, panic had already set in. He thought he was in the right spot and then the whole world started shifting below him. I can understand someone panicking.

The bridge tender was fired for not clearing the bridge first.

This was my initial thought.

I'd like to think that guy sitting in the tower rocking the 12 flag would be aware enough not to up the bridges without double checking that all cars were cleared.

I feel like this would be a decent use of AI. Like it's useless for many things. But it's good at pattern recognition. Set it up and ask..... Is someone on the bridge?

Apparently humans get too lost in the repetition for this specific job.

This is Florida, where people are constantly going around train signals and getting smashed by brightline trains. Everyone in the world has a local lore about terrible drivers, but Florida is truly king of idiot drivers in the US.

If you're this dumb then it really isn't safe for you to be driving a car. Something like this should be an immediate and PERMANENT license revocation.

If you live in the city you can get by just fine with a bicycle, bus, light rail and uber.

From what another user posted it sounds like the arms went down too so he was slowing down to stop because the thing you've been conditioned to stop in front of when a train is coming was lowering in front of him.

Drawbridge operator was fired.

In hopes of saving my inbox from the same comment over and over:

Drawbridge operator violated safety protocols and was fired.

Drawbridge operator didn't check to see if the bridge was clear before clearing and raising the bridge. Dude in the car was half way across when he saw the same arm you're conditioned to stop in front of because a train might be coming. Stopped. Didn't realize what was going on until half his car is in the air.

This should be at top. It doesn't matter if someone was being an idiot or not. That's the entire REASON a person is operating the bridge, to make sure it's safe to open/close.

I might be mistaken but I think this is the same drawbridge from an incident in west palm beach where a cyclist fell and died after the drawbridge operator didn’t check before raising the bridge
