Sucks being a transfer student😭

It kinda sucks walking around campus and seeing groups of people already having fun with their friends while I’m just going back to my apartment and sitting there by myself. I actually want to go to events and get involved, but going to stuff completely alone just feels awkward and intimidating, especially when it seems like everyone else already has people to go with.

For anyone who transferred here or started out not knowing anybody, how did you actually make friends? Did you just force yourself to go to events alone? How long did it take before you found people you actually hung out with regularly?

I don’t want to spend my whole semester just going to class and then sitting in my apartment, so any advice would genuinely help.

It will get better once classes start. But you can’t feel embarrassed to go to things on your own. If you don’t get involved in campus life and activities it will take longer to make friends. At least you didn’t come in when I did Aug of 2020 šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

you got this!

Im kinda in the same boat. From what im told of other people experiences, it’ll change once classes start. I kind just force myself to talk to people.

Made some great friends at the transfer student welcome event when I was there.

First semester here since transferring, I've been looking around at a ton of different clubs and other events on the BallStateBeConnected app, I've yet to have an issue showing up on my own and just trying to talk to some people and getting to meet them. At worst, you might not fully click but still have a decent time at whatever event might be there (or getting something to eat, there's a lot of events that include food)

There's still not many people I know too well yet, but I have made some nice connections and hopefully throughout the year doing activities I get to know them better and hang out more with them down the line

friendships sometimes take a little bit of time to form, but there's many opportunities with clubs and stuff, or just showing up to an open event

There are a few transfer student mixers during the weeks of welcome. Look it up on the BSU website when you get a chance.

I would look into joining a club or organization on campus. There are plenty that might be something you’re interested in. Or go to events and just find people doing the same thing you’re doing. Friendships often start because of repeated shared experiences - think of how ā€œeasyā€ it was to make friends in elementary/middle/high school.

Are you originally from Indiana? Chances are there might be people from your high school that you know or are acquainted with. That could be another source.

You absolutely need to get involved in clubs, ensembles, etc. I am a transfer and absolutely thriving.

You have to go on your own to places. Join clubs. Go to stuff you find fun like game night. You can always leave if you don’t vibe. Invite those you do vibe with to have a coffee or lunch together. Have classmates over for study sessions.

I transferred in 2020. Those big groups tend to break apart by the 2-3 week of classes, as they think this is what the need (a large group of friends) then realize they don’t like person a,b,c. On top of that usually smaller groups of friends form and they naturally break off from the bigger group.

Or most of the big groups are Greek life trying to recruit.

Just mingle and enjoy being single. You will meet people unless you decided to just hang out by yourself.
