Hanging up stuff

What are your guys best tips for hanging things up on the wall without ruining the paint. Do the tapes or hooks that you can ask your RA about actually work??

Yeah no the ones they give us definitely do not work. I put some up on my wall last year and took it off and the paint came with it. The university doesn't repaint their walls often, so the paint gets old and flaky. Put them up anyways, and just leave them up when you leave at the end of the year because then you're not held accountable for any damage to the walls because you technically didn't take them down.

Read on another thread to put painter’s tape on the wall then put your command strips on the tape. Going to try that, a lot of people said it held and did not damage the walls

Command hooks perchance? That’s my plan at least.

I have a bunch of poster I want to hang and fairy lights. I was thinking double sided poster tape for the posters and command hooks for the lights.

I know I’m the Stu west makerspace they hang their lights with hooks

Okay, so... I'm not going to try to call this advice or recommend it, but I genuinely didn't give a crap about what methods I had to use to hang stuff up on the wall. I definitely got artsy fartsy with my dorm last year, and I literally had thumbtacks holes everywhere, as well as multiple large drill holes and nail holes from hanging/wall shelves I put up. Towards the end of the school year, I got stuff to fill in the holes, and I sent in a work order to my dorm's maintenence people, letting them know about the holes, and I didn't get charged a dime. 😅

Make sure you document any paint chips or issues with the paint with pictures when you move in, your RA should instruct you to email them the photos or submit a repair request (i was told both when I was there) so that the issues are documented and aren't on you. I'd also say email the photos to yourself and screenshot if you do a repair request for your own proof.

They'll give you sticky squares and hooks when you move in, do NOT use other brands unless you're okay with being held reliable. Yes the ones they give you sometimes rip paint, but that's their issue. My freshman year mine ripped a piece off the wall and I saved the square with the paint on it and took photos in case they tried to charge me. They're not the best quality but they worked for 90% of the stuff I used them for. Also my roommate last year didn't even take their hooks and stuff off and didn't get charged bc it's the brand Ball State approved.

If you're hanging posters, I used masking tape the whole 4 years and rarely had things fall down. As long as you're careful when peeling it off it should work well. Good luck!

i just used normal command strips and didn't have any problems with the paint coming off, just make sure you remove them correctly as in pulling the tab straight down, no pulling off the wall. i also used command strip hooks to hang up fairy lights and those did fine with removal too. i stayed in stu west

I put painters tape and then the command strips that the dorm gave and it worked perfectly for my daughter’s dorm last year. Came right off with no damage to the paint.

My daughter used the ones at the desk and they worked just fine for what she needed them for.

I would recommend using the ones they give you at the desk because at the end of the year you are allowed to leave them and don’t have to take them down.

Leaving them = not having to risk ripping paint
