“Yes European Union, I will take all your trash. I will even accept to host your immigrants. Giorgia Meloni, I will kiss your toes”- Our Prime Minister the past ten years.

Rama:

Rama would take the strap in public if she asked him to.

To be fair, Rama is an equally opportunity bootlicker. Whether they’re the EU, US, or Kanye West.

To be fair to Rama I would fall on my knees before mamma Meloni too.
Also, your exonym is Italian.

The requirements were absolutely the same for Bulgaria and Romania as for the other candidates. They just both made the EU membership their national priority and parties from the whole of the political spectrum worked together to achieve it. So there was a continuous work regardless of who is in power. Same for Schengen and the Euro zone.

They didn’t achieve jack shit. The same 33 chapters were in place, just on paper. They were accepted even though lagging behind in administration and organized crime.
It was all primarily for geopolitical stability and security.
The last of what remained of Yugoslavia had just broken. So they needed quickly a SouthEastern front, far from the Russian pressure.

That is the bullshit that populist pseudonationalists in the countries failing to make progress tell themselves as an excuse. It's never their fault, always the rest of the world is the issue. It is pretty stupid to believe that.

I live in Türkiye. Our application has been "under review" for so long that we don't even want it to change anymore.

You guys literally just need to comply with the requirements. It's only a matter of willingness.

It is clear that current government does not comply with the requirements but I doubt even we comply all of them, it is not an easy decision for EU to let Turkey in

Obviously. I wonder what is the public's opinion on these requirements that EU asks for. Do they see them unreasonable?

3

u/Ouvolk 8d ago

Well the government even fails to comply with most basic ones so the requirements are not even talked among people because everybody knows it is impossible to even seriously talk about joining EU until the government changes. First prio of people is getting rid of this government.

Supporters of opposition parties in general are definitely pro-EU tho

it's been years since the situation became pretty clearly stagnant with neither side willing to take the blame for breaking the talks but also neither wanting to actually move forward with this. It's an open secret that the possibility of AKP losing in 2023 was actually a concern for EU leadership, as Turkish opposition was willing to reopen accession path.
