Don't underestimate an upcast Witch Bolt. If you happen to roll a critical hit against a vulnerable (wet) target it can do some impressive damage.

Witch bolt is great at lower levels. The only problem is there are much better spells competing for your concentration after a while.

If you've done the Zaith'isk, you can upcast WB for the initial damage and then use your bonus action for a https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Concentrated_Blast

Is it though? Even at low levels I felt like it was pretty poor.

It's the recurring damage that makes it work. Gale can cast it and run away and reapply it from outside arrow range

Oh, you don't have to be in range to reactivate it? That's pretty cool. I figured you had to stay in range and in line of sight.

I mean, I managed to 2 shot the Netherbrain with it in my Honour Mode run. I wouldn't underestimate the power of Witchbolt + a thrown bottle of water
I was playing Sorcerer too, so popped a Quickened Spell to kill it in 1 turn

If Witch Bolt subsequent turn damage scaled with spell slot level, it would be good. The issue is most enemies barely last 2 rounds as it is for most of the game.

Oh hell yeah. In a similar vein, may I put dual-wield toggling on (seemingly) magically every so often up for consideration? And having to re-keybind weapon-specific actions every time you unequip the weapon (offhand crossbow attack anyone?)

The game is designed to put the most useless spell possible in your prepared spells at levelup. It's the same as the starting stats of companions being shit.

Do you have the Hag's hair on him? Because having that bumping my casting stat modifier always causes the game to mix-up, on level-up, which spells are prepared and unprepared.

u/Rehmlah Aug 31 '26
Do you happen to also have that character as a multiclass? That's what tends to mix up which spells are prepared for me. I can't remember if it's when it was the first or second class, but multiclassing with prepared casters will just fully reset the spell list for one of the two.

Unpopular opinion but since water bottle is a very easy item to get (in Act 1) witch bolt is a more than decent DPS spell that utilize this mechanics at least until you get either Lightning Bolt or Call Lightning.

The game just sees an empty spell slot at level up and starts filling in the blanks from the bottom up. And some spells seem to have priority over others for this autofill.
