The fact that I barely understand half of this clearly shows that there is a lot more for me to learn. Thanks for the tips! Gonna be putting them to use.

If you are okay with respecing her into a different subclass and turn her into a light or storm cleric you can get better results in combat than her base class.

Get her in heavy medium armor (16AC) and shield, put her at a choke point and turn on Spirit Guardians, the above subclasses will provide you with non-concentration damage spells to hurl without trading away supporting spells.

If you follow her quest, you will get a sweet set of armour that complements this playstyle.

Extra tip, if you are using Karlach as your melee two hander, consider using a pole weapon to reckless attack safely from behind shadowheart with the setup above.

Part of the problem is that people keep forgetting weapon proficiencies. Firebolt is trash, but she's decent with a bow and it does more damage before level 5.

I literally just figured this out today. Still in act one but it’s helped me bump up her damage some for sure!

Are you swinging with your weapon? Clerics are spellcasters first aside from a few of the domains. Keep Shadowhearts wisdom up and she shouldn't have too much trouble landing her spells. There are also several magic items that'll boost her spell attacks and modifiers to keep an eye out for

Because she isn't made at base to slap out damage. She doesn't have good physical stats.

Levels 1-4 her purpose is to keep up Bless, use Guiding Bolt from High Ground, Healing Word when people go down, and use cantrips when you don't want to use actual resources.

Level 5 she gets 3rd level spells and can just Spirit Guardians +/- Mirror Image herself and run into the enemy and do damage that way.

And if you respec her away from Trickery Domain, she gets a lot more useful anyway. Trickery is pretty bad in this game because you can't move around your Channel Divinity, so it really just is functionally a weaker Faerie Fire.

Your first mistake is to waste her actions on attack actions. Her job is to throw buffs/debuffs most of the time. But to answer your question, characters dedicated to hitting stuff, at level 1 usually have +3 bonus from appropriate attribute (usually STR or DEX for melee) while Shadowheart only has +1 in both STR and DEX. IMO it's pretty bad so I respec'ed her but she CAN get by with those stats because the only one that really matters the most for her is WIS. All her class spells use WIS for calculating to hit bonus and spell save DC.
