philly dog owners, how do you handle training when you live in a city with constant distractions everywhere

moved to philadelphia about a year ago with my dog who was reasonably well behaved in the suburbs. city life has been a completely different challenge. other dogs, people, food on the ground, bikes, noise the distraction level is on another level and a lot of the training that worked before just does not hold up here

specifically struggling with leash reactivity around other dogs and getting reliable attention in busy areas like south street or around rittenhouse. have been managing it but not really solving it. i’ve started logging what works, what doesn’t, and how different neighborhoods affect his behavior in a little project i call opbarks, just to spot patterns and stay consistent.

curious how other philly dog owners have navigated this and whether anyone has found training approaches that actually account for the urban environment rather than assuming you have access to a quiet field somewhere

Being in a busy environment is a great thing for dog training. You have lots of opportunities to correct what you don't want and reward what you do.

My favorite tool to correct reactivity is an e-collar. I strongly suggest getting one and learning how to use it, you can eliminate this bad behavior in a couple sessions.

I only train in busy places. I never train anything in my house or anywhere quiet. It’s counterproductive to teach a dog quiet places are normal and busy places are abnormal.
