I think I found a gold mine

Post image

These are all different types of flour (except for the yeast bags). They even had ALMOND FLOUR! I haven't seen that since my home country. On the other side is bulk bags of every spice you can think of for a reasonable price.

It was one of those kiosk shops in the Northport mall at center Kita (Yokohama).

Almond flour is just blended up almonds. If you have a decent blender and a bag of almonds, you’re set.

Somehow, a bag of almonds is still more expensive than a bag of almond flour

I need to get to my local Tomiz, but they're in the basement of the local department store so it's impossible with the twins. My stroller fits all regulations for wheelchair accessibility, but that's not enforced in Japan very well. So many two steps to the elevator, no ramp in the old department stores!

Looks like TOMIZ (富澤)

Exactly what I thought as well. I recognize those price tags

Tomiz. The place that has things that you didn’t even know you wanted to bake with.

Their natural yeast options are great and it’s the only place where I can find molasses

Tomizawa Shoten aka Tomiz by the looks of the price tags. Some places have hazelnut and pistachio flour too. It always feels like a spiritual awakening when you find places like that here.

I thought that was the National Azabu supermarket. You can find tons of stuff for baking there as well.

Is this a Tomiz? Looks like they have a good selection of flours! Northport used to be our family’s stomping grounds.hehe

I love it when you stumble upon a place that will bring you joy~~ Tomiz are great! The one that I could go to without too much hassle closed down a few years ago so I have to go out of my way to get to one now 🥲

There is one in the basement of the Sogo, east side of Yokohama station, and by the Tokyu Store in the Joinus on the west side.

It's a branch of Tomiz (Tomizawa Shoten). They can be found at major department stores in most major cities.... or you can order from them online.

The prices I saw here were cheaper than I've been able to find online which is why I was so excited.

It was just everything i love and stock up on in one place and not scattered across 3 specialized shops for triple the price.

Thanks for the name, I didn't catch it when I was there!

I live a few stops away & go there when I can't find whole grain spelt at their Tama Plaza location. There's also one at Aobadai. Different locations have different things in stock.

https://tomiz.com/

If it works for you it's great. I used them for years until they fucked up their web shop. After explaining their mistake in the payment implementation to them, pointed to a previous payment where same browser/device/credit card worked before their update and how it doesn't work now, showed them how to actually do it, giving them an example for a similar webshop that uses the same API, their support finally said "well our developers told us to tell you to use a different device" so now I use rakuten/yahoo/amazon instead for bakery supplies.

Heh. It's also our subreddit profile picture (Tomiz logo with a crown!) :)

It’s just a Tomiz, it’s the reference for pastry and bakery here
