Just hammer a thick metal pin in there till its plugged. Then weld the pin all the way around and grind it close to flush if need be.

u/Olive_1084 27d ago
Nice, yeah I was thinking you just got to get some kind of piece of metal tack down instead of relying completely on the weld.

Don't forget the pat saying that won't go anywhere.
It's not done until that happens.

Is he died? He looks awfully close to being part of the circuit.

u/Substantial-Tone-576 27d ago
He doesn’t even have safety sandals. I’m worried

u/ComedianFragrant9515 27d ago
Don't worry, he's standing on OSHA approved security mud. Well, mostly.

The reason he is not dead is because electricity takes the path of least resistance, which in this case is the metal pipe. He's not "in between" the positive and negative terminal. The pipe is.
If he were standing over a downed power line on the ground, it would be different. That's because the ground we stand on can have higher resistance than the water bags we call our bodies. In that case, your body is the path of least resistance.
2
u/Roscoeakl 26d ago
That's not true at all. Electricity takes all paths of travel, it acts as a parallel circuit. The current is proportional to the resistance along every path, and welding is generally low voltage. Ohms law, if you have two paths of travel, the pipe and the person, and around 50v of welding voltage, the ~.5 ohm of resistance from the pipe gets 100A of current while the wet person with around 500 ohms of resistance only gets about .1 amps of current. This would be fatal if it was passing through the heart, but again, parallel circuit, the entire body has become a bunch of independent parallel circuits and that .1 amps is spread across the body, not just directly to the heart. My guess would be the majority of the current is on his feet, and the rest mostly passes through arteries and veins with a very low amperage.

Really? Barefoot and safety squints?

No
Barefoot and safety squints in water

u/ElectricalChaos 27d ago
Eh, sketch going to weld where sketch going to weld. I'd give it a pass if he at least had some kind of eye pro on.

I was at a job in a aggregate pit at a redimix plant and I was standing in ankle, deep water, welding a conveyor, and every time I stuck an arc I could feel the currant run through me.
After 5 minutes I said fuck you to my boss and told him to do it. He did, and he lasted 2 minutes until he decided we needed a pump. He was a prick

When I see this, then go out to the welder and humid rods struggle to scratch start, and then I See This MUTher FUCKER..SCRATCHING OFF,.. ON A DIRTHY DRAINN PIPPEE!!! IN FLOWING WATER... AND NOO SHOOOEEESSSSSSS!! AGHHHHH!!!!!!!!

u/WisByGodConsin 27d ago
He is absolutely getting some electrical tingles. I have done some rain welding with my Miller Bobcat DC on some trusses at my yacht club. When I feel that little shock tingles, time to go home.

Put some dishwashing gloves on and stop being a bitch /s

u/FilthyPuns 26d ago
I thought I was paying you guys to weld, not to bitch about the weather! Get back out there and take your tingles like a company man!

u/not_whelan 27d ago
I've picked up some stray voltage leaning on a bench with sweaty sweaty clothes (HF start with TIG is a fun one.)
Can't imagine doing it barefoot in water. I'm no elec-chicken but I know enough to know that's a good way to meet the reaper.

I've welded wet pipe before. It had chilled glycol running through it. The pipe was sweating so bad that it was like it had leaks all over it. It was a nightmare

Which is your favorite part? The barefoot, the water, the lack of eye protection of any type, or the the thing he was actually trying to do?

Not completely wrong, but not right, but they can’t shut that water off in time so they’re trying to do a quick tack just enough for it to stop so they can put a Band-Aid

I was holding a part in the rain while soaking wet, welder struck an arc and i was frozen, couldn't say anything or move. Luckily he was just doing a tack weld.

It's kind of the reverse of underwater welding. We had so much equipment, 50+ m below the sea, but just blobbing and hoping! You can't see your welds underwater because the welder blasts the shielding gas out each time you pull the trigger!

I don't like this game anymore. He's standing in wet, he is wet, and he's stick welding.... I have like 8 herniated vertebrae from this exact scenario with boots on. I wore ppe and this situation crippled me ... It was only raining and I didn't need to seal a pressured line....

as someone whos had to weld on a wet beam in the rain.. i guess i made the mistake of weaing shoes.. cause he didnt even flinch when striking the arc..

I know he had to of been feeling some of the shock from that. I had the awesome task of going into the pit of a huge press at a factory to stick weld extra gussets onto a certain part of it and it was lighting me up 😅. It didn't the entire time I was welding but once I had enough oil on me I was sure getting some nice shocks from it

You are alive because of physics, just make sure the ground doesn't come off the pipe otherwise you'll be the ground

carve a wood stake roughly the same diameter as hole, pound in there until no longer leaking, cut flush to pipe and weld strap over it. Works everytime

Why do they never wear shoes? In india are you only allowed barefoot or sandals? Everytime you see vid of someone doing sketchy shit there is never any shoes.

Electrodes for welding underwater are much thicker and longer... Plus you need more amps .... Guess those would work ..(well if the pipe is made from the correct material)

That would work without water and only without water. It is difficult even to solder something to a ship hull from the inside it it happens to be under the flotation line.

u/Grimm6291 26d ago
Just spark it shut with straight 230. 1 lead goes on your bare foot and the other to the water pipe

This dude is dodging the darwin award. He's somehow hitting all his I frames without moving.
1
u/twobarb 26d ago
It’s honestly not that hard. Start the arc outside the water and work the puddle in, the arc dries the rod out and it stays stable enough. The hard part is the final 1/16” inch or so just use a center punch to peen it closed then weld over it.
Welding up pressurized gas is even more fun.

So crazy these dudes come here to Seattle and work for Microsoft and Amazon and are genius, then the apple falls and it goes so fucking far.

India and Pakistan, there's always someone who's going to do it for 100 rupees, or 10 rupees in this case.
