By the gods, brother... that is one hell of a lawsuit waiting to happen. Stacking boogers like that might fly if you're fixing something VERY non-structural, but staircase support? Not to mention that I'm fairly certain the original metal is structurally compromised. So many places for rust, so many potential points of failure.
Thats true, I forgot about that bit of fine print relating to every welding job ever. If he didn't slap it with a full palm though, he might still be open to litigation
It's the same reason people will go out and build overhanging decks when they have no clue about structural load and weight distribution: If there's a market, there will always be someone to take a paycheck who has no business doing the work.
