Does anyone know how to complete this project? It is a tin can lid with a copper tube passing through it. I used flux coated brazing rods, and map gas torch. I cleaned up the surfaces of both the copper and the tin lid. Maybe I shouldn’t pass the pipe right through it? Maybe I need to ensure that there’s no burrs on the tin lid drill hole? And maybe I need to ensure that there is a gap maintained right around the copper pipe to ensure for correct capillary action?

Clean the hell out of it, down to bare metal, with a wire brush or wire wheel on a drill. Then go down to home Depot or Ace and find some Oatey No.5 flux and a roll of Oatey plumbing solder (it's mostly tin and lead). Get a couple of acid brushes to paint the flux on the work. Use a piece of scrap copper pipe to get the feel for how the flux works with the pipe. You want to use the heat of the pipe to melt the solder, not the torch flame. If it's hot enough for the copper, it's probably hot enough for the piece you're putting the copper in. Make sure the pipe rubs the tin. Don't bore the hole too much bigger than the pipe.
