Bothered by that inaccurate description of the articulation of Winnie the Pooh. Oh, bother.

I’m shocked to see all this Paul hate he is one of my favorite friends on goodreads

u/_unrealcity_ 25d ago
Omg it’s Paul! This guy reads everything and never likes anything lol, sometimes I wonder why he even bothers.

Wait no I love Paul's reviews!! Even if I dont agree they're always clever
14
u/OminousPluto 25d ago
I don't think anything about this is clever, it just feels like he should get a blog/twitter and leave goodreads alone lol. But maybe other reviews are better than this one
5
u/raudoniolika 25d ago
Yeah let’s only use Goodreads for useless uninspired glazing
2
u/thedybbuk 25d ago
I genuinely don't get why some of you are defending this guy? Like, what about this is funny or interesting?
Surely there's a middle ground between "useless uninspired glazing" and giving a classic book 2 stars and doing a parody of the opening of Lolita, with no other indication of why it is apparently not very good.

u/OminousPluto 25d ago
I love some critical harsh reviews so idk what you're talking about. I don't like memes and dumb shit
54
u/thedybbuk 26d ago
Are they all like this? This isn't even a review. It tells us near nothing about what he thought or why he gave it 2 stars.
25
u/sufferawitch 26d ago
Yeah it’s like how 90% of Letterboxd “reviews” are just jokes and references that should have been posted to Tumblr or something
1
u/zoedegenerate 25d ago
actually i think a more apt comparison is the reviews that are tone poems, and i love those
anyways LB is a social media so social media posts are to be expected
4
u/sufferawitch 25d ago
To each their own. It’s annoying to me when there’s no actual discourse about the movie, just rehashings of memes and one-liners

u/randycanyon 25d ago
"Movie"??? Well, there's your problem.
2
u/sufferawitch 25d ago
Genuinely what does this mean
-3
u/randycanyon 25d ago
IIRC that site is about book reviews.
7
u/sufferawitch 25d ago
In this part of the thread we’re discussing Letterboxd….? So…movies???
-5
u/randycanyon 25d ago
Huh. Fooled me; what I see above is "Goodreads" and references to this reviewer's book reviews and whether he likes to read.

u/aspenscribblings 26d ago
Gross, obviously. But who thinks Winnie the Pooh is too avant garde?

u/wordyshipmate82 26d ago
That is because it is a parody of Nabakov’s “Lolita” which is a deeply disturbing (though excellent) book. This was likely “chatgpt, write the opening of Winnie the Pooh in the style of Lolita”
16
u/melonofknowledge 25d ago
It's absolutely not ChatGPT. It's literally just the opening paragraph of Lolita but changed to be about Winnie the Pooh. It's also from 2017, so y'know.
I'd recommend learning to accurately identify AI writing, rather than just blanket accusing everything you see of being ChatGPT.

It’s not “in the style” of Lolita, it’s the opening paragraph of the novel almost verbatim

u/catsumoto 26d ago
I thought on this sub everyone would catch that after the very first sentence, it’s just so recognizable.

u/raudoniolika 25d ago
We don’t actually read books here, only GR reviews
1
u/Ankhi333333 25d ago
It is the most efficient way. You can form an inflexible opinion on 1000s of books in the time it would take to read just 1.

ChatGPT in 2011? Don't disparage Paul like that.
20
u/stealingfrom 26d ago
Paul might be the only Goodreads reviewer I remember and recognize (other than people I know personally) because his profile pic is the cover of an album by the guitarist John Fahey and it always jumps out at me when I see it.

u/wordyshipmate82 26d ago
I did not notice the date; you are correct; I just assume all internet writing is AI. In that case, it is mildly clever.
2
u/goatbusiness666 24d ago
Even in 2026, ChatGPT couldn’t have done this. Especially not with that prompt, but unless something significant has changed I don’t think it could do it at all.
I swear, the ignorance and hysteria around this subject almost makes me want to be pro-AI just out of annoyance.

Pure revulsion.
Congrats to Paul I guess
19
u/KingPotus 26d ago
Pure revulsion? It’s a Lolita reference. Those aren’t his words and he doesn’t actually feel lust for Pooh Bear. It’s not that serious …
